Unknown speaker not human verified

Next, I would like to introduce Ms. Jeannie Griffith, Secretary, and Ms. Suzanne Foster,

Unknown speaker not human verified

membership chair of the Katy ISD Council of PTAs for a special presentation

Unknown speaker not human verified

in early December of 2015 the Katy Council ISD Katy ISD Council of PTAs

Unknown speaker not human verified

membership committee consisting of jeannie griffith rebecca fox and myself meant to discuss

Unknown speaker not human verified

who would receive this year's texas honorary life membership awards this award is one of the highest

Unknown speaker not human verified

forms of recognition texas pta can give to an individual to let him or her know how much we

Unknown speaker not human verified

appreciate their dedication to our children and our community this prestigious award is

Unknown speaker not human verified

being bestowed upon mr. Alton Frey way this evening I mentioned I mentioned

Unknown speaker not human verified

that we met in early December of 2015 because we want to be clear that we are

Unknown speaker not human verified

awarding this award to mr. Frey way because he deserves our recognition and

Unknown speaker not human verified

our thanks because of everything he has done for a school we're not avoiding

Unknown speaker not human verified

We are awarding this because he is retiring. We are awarding this because it is very well deserved.

Unknown speaker not human verified

There are so many reasons why Mr. Fraley is deserving of this award, but I will only mention a few.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. Fraley affectionately calls our PTA volunteers the secret sauce,

Unknown speaker not human verified

because he knows that Katy ISD would not have our current success and stellar reputation without our numerous volunteers.

Unknown speaker not human verified

He knows that our volunteers are consistently giving of themselves to ensure that our students, teachers, and schools have all the help we can supply.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. Fraley helps set the tone of importance for the volunteers in KDISD.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Another reason we are awarding this honorary life membership is that it exemplifies our PTA core belief that we should make every child's potential a reality.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Every day that he goes to work, visits our schools, attends meetings, is on behalf of

Unknown speaker not human verified

our children in trying to ensure that they have the best opportunity for a successful

Unknown speaker not human verified

future.

Unknown speaker not human verified

A personal reason that I believe Mr. Fraley is entitled to this recognition, but one that

Unknown speaker not human verified

I also believe serves as an example to show his dedication to our children, is that when

Unknown speaker not human verified

my son was in second grade, his artwork was put up in the Education Service Center.

Unknown speaker not human verified

and we all trucked down as a family so we could admire his artistic endeavors.

Unknown speaker not human verified

While we were there, we saw Mr. Fraley walking down a distant hall

Unknown speaker not human verified

and he could have just kept going, but instead he backtracked.

Unknown speaker not human verified

He came back and he posed for a picture and praised my child's artwork.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And then he was so kind.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And then my child the next day took the picture to school

Unknown speaker not human verified

so he could show his teachers and his friends

Unknown speaker not human verified

that he had his picture taken with the man in charge of all schools.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So with great admiration and appreciation, we award the Texas PTA Honorary Life Membership

Unknown speaker not human verified

to Mr. Fraley.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I'll be from the back.

Unknown speaker not human verified

congratulations mr. Fraley district administration magazine created a national recognition program

Unknown speaker not human verified

to honor school districts that are leading the way with new ideas that work.

Unknown speaker not human verified

In a quest to give stakeholders using any device easy access to a wide range of district data,

Unknown speaker not human verified

dashboards, and a mobile app were created.

Unknown speaker not human verified

KDISD first developed the public dashboard to disseminate information to the public

Unknown speaker not human verified

and create greater transparency around district operations.

Unknown speaker not human verified

In the second phase, district technology leaders developed the on-the-go mobile app,

Unknown speaker not human verified

which provides real-time information to parents and the community the public

Unknown speaker not human verified

dashboard had 20,000 page views in the past 18 months the mobile app has been

Unknown speaker not human verified

downloaded over 44,000 times and as a primary resource for student and parents

Unknown speaker not human verified

when searching for information these numbers are proof of the success of

Unknown speaker not human verified

these initiatives please join me in congratulating Jamie Hines director of

Unknown speaker not human verified

business intelligence and his team for being honored by district

Unknown speaker not human verified

Administration Magazine on their districts of distinction recognition

Unknown speaker not human verified

program for improving access to data for all users

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you.

Unknown speaker not human verified

congratulations on your recognition this concludes our recognitions for this evening thank you very

Unknown speaker not human verified

GRU is next Thursday night on April 7th. Reception starts at 6, dinner is at 630.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The teachers are actually currently busy writing the grants for that will be

Unknown speaker not human verified

submitted to the foundation and 25% of the overall funds from last year's jazz

Unknown speaker not human verified

event actually went to fund these grants and that money goes directly back into

Unknown speaker not human verified

the classroom and so if you have not purchased your ticket to attend group i highly recommend

Unknown speaker not human verified

Alton Frailey not human verified

And that moves us to our favorite section, Section 8, Reports.

Alton Frailey not human verified

Mr. Gunnell.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Well, President Griffin, let me turn this on.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It is.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you, Trustees.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you, Superintendent Frathee, for the opportunity to talk with you tonight.

Unknown speaker not human verified

For tonight's presentation, it's always a fun time of the year for us.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I think it'll take about 45 minutes to run through I've given eight minutes to each of my direct

Unknown speaker not human verified

reports and I'll take a little more than five in front of you should have a binder that you

Unknown speaker not human verified

know has a copy of today's presentation probably most all the script and other documents particularly

Unknown speaker not human verified

those that we've provided to will leadership and Katie in the past every year I mentioned

Unknown speaker not human verified

to use some key areas and this year I'm particularly focusing on five in my book

Unknown speaker not human verified

it all starts with safety and we continue to make improvements to our

Unknown speaker not human verified

facilities and our plans this past year members of the KD ISD staff were key

Unknown speaker not human verified

architects of the published national best practices for interscholastic

Unknown speaker not human verified

athletics and after-school secured safety and security of course with the

Unknown speaker not human verified

success of the 2014 bond we have a lot of work to do and the board has been

Unknown speaker not human verified

great and helping us move along the projects at a brisk pace we are looking

Unknown speaker not human verified

forward to opening three new schools on time in just a few months we presented

Unknown speaker not human verified

our transportation sustainability report to you a few months ago and are pleased

Unknown speaker not human verified

to reaffirm that we are able to maintain the current service levels for next year

Unknown speaker not human verified

in December we completed our ABM for next year it was a unique ABM as it

Unknown speaker not human verified

addressed not only new schools but overcrowded schools with no anticipated

Unknown speaker not human verified

relief as well I was more than pleased with how well we were able to consider a

Unknown speaker not human verified

wide variety of inputs and in my opinion craft the best plan possible tonight you

Unknown speaker not human verified

were also here for my direct reports I'll talk to you about our high quality

Unknown speaker not human verified

workforce this is an image an initiative born from the highly qualified

Unknown speaker not human verified

requirements for teachers but expanded to include all operations personnel

Unknown speaker not human verified

whether they be police officers or project managers just a quick review of

Unknown speaker not human verified

my org chart and this will be the batting order for tonight peter mcawine is the district architect

Unknown speaker not human verified

and planner kathy mcdonald the assistant superintendent for maintenance and operations

Unknown speaker not human verified

mike robinson the assistant superintendent for support services yolanda edmund assistant

Unknown speaker not human verified

superintendent for human resources and last but not least robert jinks our police chief

Unknown speaker not human verified

and you notice here the org chart shows a dotted line to me but the chief according to texas law

Unknown speaker not human verified

must report to the superintendent I put this chart up so you can see in a quick

Unknown speaker not human verified

graphic how the operations employees compared to student enrollment our 2015

Unknown speaker not human verified

2016 ratio was 32.7 students for each operations employee compare that to last

Unknown speaker not human verified

year 2014 2015 the ratio was 31.5 I found this chart interesting the shaded

Unknown speaker not human verified

Area shows you how our cumulative square footage has grown over the years and how we projected to be above 13 million square feet

Unknown speaker not human verified

In just 17 more months the blue bars show you the square footage in any given year I

Unknown speaker not human verified

Know this is probably your favorite part of my brief. Sorry, but I will not be showing this movie tonight

Unknown speaker not human verified

It's time for operations fun facts

Unknown speaker not human verified

This year there are 12 of them, so I'm calling them the dirty dozen, and I asked that Kathy

Unknown speaker not human verified

McDonald and her custodians not to take offense at the title.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Okay, the first one.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Did you know that KDISD is adding 9,140 seats, six schools, over the next 17 months?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Just these schools alone would put KDISD in the top 10% of Texas school districts' enrollments.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I think that would put us just a hair behind DeSoto.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Our custodians use about 3 million trash bags a year.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So if we gave the trash bags to every student, they'd have about 41 of those to take home.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Try to put those in your backpack.

Unknown speaker not human verified

In April 2015, we had nearly 1,500 candidates attend the Job Teacher Fair for 164 vacancies.

Unknown speaker not human verified

That's a ratio of about nine teacher applicants to every position that was available.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Now our Katy Police Department works cooperatively with the DEA and just an example this past

Unknown speaker not human verified

fall we used some of those trash bags we talked about earlier.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We filled up 42 of them with disposing of prescription drugs along with four boxes of

Unknown speaker not human verified

those with each other wise would have ended up in either landfills or in sewers and i wouldn't

Unknown speaker not human verified

recommend this but did the math works kde isd uses enough paper towels in one year that if

Unknown speaker not human verified

they were rolled out you could create a big a bridge to hawaii and back as of uh for the year

Unknown speaker not human verified

between august and september 20 2014 and september 2015 our environmental team caught 32 mexican free

Unknown speaker not human verified

free-tailed bats, removed the bat colony of an estimated 150 bats,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and removed seven bats from Tompkins softball field just minutes before the game.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I always thought bats were part of the softball game, but we removed them anyway.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Now, KDISD serves about six and a half.

Unknown speaker not human verified

All right, take your minute.

Unknown speaker not human verified

it even even the scouts are grinning at that one okay now in Katie ISD we serve about six and a

Unknown speaker not human verified

half billion servings of fruits every year and that's enough to serve one serving of fruit to

Unknown speaker not human verified

everybody who lives in Houston and Fort Worth and Dallas and Austin and San Antonio

Unknown speaker not human verified

Now over the past 12 years we've had something called Santa Cops, and our police department collects from our staff and from the public donations. Last year police report that about $55,000 worth of goods and merchandise were taken to the police department so that we could really make a great Christmas for a whole bunch of disadvantaged children.

Unknown speaker not human verified

our distribution center and textbooks departments looks like it's probably clip art from UPS on

Unknown speaker not human verified

average we make 23 stops every weekday or about 6,000 pickups and deliveries every every year

Unknown speaker not human verified

and you compare that to where with what we do with purchase orders 41,000 purchase orders for

Unknown speaker not human verified

last year. That's equivalent to about 160 purchase orders every workday. Now last

Unknown speaker not human verified

year KDISD's buses made almost 5,500 activity trips in which a total of 9,200

Unknown speaker not human verified

buses were used. Includes UIL, extracurricular, and field trips. And did

Unknown speaker not human verified

you know that KDISD has 60 grounds employees maintaining 2,200 acres? Now

Unknown speaker not human verified

compare that to Augusta National Golf Course where they have the Masters. They

Unknown speaker not human verified

They have more grounds personnel than we do,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and they only maintain 100 acres of fairways and greens.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Which brings me to the next point.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Speaking of golf, Peter McElwain is up next,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and the reason I put this one in is Peter's a heck of a golfer.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So drive long, friend.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thanks, Tom.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Good evening, President Griffin, Board Member, Superintendent Fraley.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I would like to utilize my allocated time this evening not to discuss project specifics,

Unknown speaker not human verified

but to describe the mortar which has led to the success of countless projects over almost

Unknown speaker not human verified

two decades for Katy ISD and its staff and students as the district has grown and continues

Unknown speaker not human verified

to grow at a tremendous rate.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The mortar in this analogy are the project managers within the facilities and planning

Unknown speaker not human verified

and construction department and I have my project manager family here with me

Unknown speaker not human verified

this evening to maybe ask them to stand up Alan Patrick unfortunately is ill

Unknown speaker not human verified

tonight the district the district is that thanks folks the district is

Unknown speaker not human verified

blessed to have a team of six extremely talented and dedicated individuals most

Unknown speaker not human verified

of whom you see regularly at board meetings and or board project related

Unknown speaker not human verified

events such as ground breakings tours and dedications the goal of this short

Unknown speaker not human verified

presentation tonight is to identify for the board the full breadth of their

Unknown speaker not human verified

responsibilities and the value which they bring to the organization the far

Unknown speaker not human verified

left box of the organization chart for my department identifies the project

Unknown speaker not human verified

managers a relatively small team considering that considering the

Unknown speaker not human verified

tremendous magnitude of construction work accomplished on an annual basis

Unknown speaker not human verified

these photographs of the project managers Scott Walker Lisa Cassman

Unknown speaker not human verified

Nathan folks art Campbell as well as the associate project managers Trey Barnett

Unknown speaker not human verified

and Alan Patrick captures them all within the environment which they love

Unknown speaker not human verified

the construction of excellent educational environments for our

Unknown speaker not human verified

students and staff. Together the project managers represent a high quality

Unknown speaker not human verified

workforce with a total combined work experience of 138 years which includes

Unknown speaker not human verified

58 combined years at Katy ISD. They are extremely technically proficient and

Unknown speaker not human verified

their varied respective technical backgrounds in the areas of construction

Unknown speaker not human verified

management, civil engineering, construction science, architecture,

Unknown speaker not human verified

environmental design, post 9-11 building design, construction field experience, and

Unknown speaker not human verified

facilities operations management all provide synergy when approaching as a

Unknown speaker not human verified

team project design and construction challenges. The current model of project

Unknown speaker not human verified

management for the district was first developed in the year 2000 and since

Unknown speaker not human verified

that time has led to the successful completion of projects totaling

Unknown speaker not human verified

approximately $1.5 billion. Current average annual construction expenditures of approximately

Unknown speaker not human verified

$180 million to $220 million equates to the construction of approximately 45 new 3,200

Unknown speaker not human verified

square foot homes per month or approximately 1.5 new homes from start to finish per day.

Unknown speaker not human verified

In 2007, KDISD was one of only 11 districts nationally to receive the Facilities Master's Award by the Association of School Business Officials International.

Unknown speaker not human verified

One important criteria of which was related to project management and associated outreach and interrelationships.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This slide, and you should have a hard copy of this, a large copy of this to follow, there's

Unknown speaker not human verified

a fair bit of information on this particular slide.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This slide indicates in a graphic continuum the full scope of responsibilities carried

Unknown speaker not human verified

by the project managers throughout the design and construction process, commencing with

Unknown speaker not human verified

research and planning tasks, continuing through involvement in property acquisition studies,

Unknown speaker not human verified

design development, pre-construction, construction, and post-construction analysis.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The primary tasks are indicated within the corresponding colored boxes within the legend.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This model indicates the wide range of their responsibilities and the project leadership

Unknown speaker not human verified

which the project managers provide daily in order to accomplish the equation for project success.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Success has been possible as a result of excellent budget and schedule control, coupled with a quality outcome reflecting cost and functional effectiveness, leading to customer satisfaction.

Unknown speaker not human verified

In studying the model, you will recognize several common task types.

Unknown speaker not human verified

types. Analysis, communication, collaboration, coordination, observation, problem solving,

Unknown speaker not human verified

quality control, cost and schedule control. These are all essential ingredients to the

Unknown speaker not human verified

recipe for success. At last year's Operations Division update, I presented our model for

Unknown speaker not human verified

outreach and design. The project managers play a pivotal role in this regard, interacting

Unknown speaker not human verified

with a wide range of stakeholders both inside and outside the organization on a daily basis

Unknown speaker not human verified

they are excellent ambassadors for the department and district responding to the needs of all of the

Unknown speaker not human verified

diverse stakeholder groups in the planning design and construction process they do this in a very

Unknown speaker not human verified

customer-centered professional manner they all strongly believe in the team approach to successful

Unknown speaker not human verified

projects. The following list of projects is too extensive to discuss in detail in

Unknown speaker not human verified

the time that I have available this evening, but each project has had its

Unknown speaker not human verified

associated set of challenges which the project managers at the time tackled in

Unknown speaker not human verified

a very thorough and professional manner, leading to successful conclusions and

Unknown speaker not human verified

extremely satisfied end-users. Several of these projects have been the proud

Unknown speaker not human verified

recipient of numerous design awards and recognitions from both state and

Unknown speaker not human verified

national organizations and publications. I encourage you to view the full list of

Unknown speaker not human verified

projects which includes 24 new elementary schools, 9 junior high schools,

Unknown speaker not human verified

5 high schools, along with numerous major school addition and renovation projects.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And I wish I could take time to talk about each one but each one of these

Unknown speaker not human verified

projects comes with a thousand stories instructional support facility projects

Unknown speaker not human verified

and administrative support facilities plot projects please reflect on the

Unknown speaker not human verified

tremendous benefit that each has provided for students and staff as well

Unknown speaker not human verified

as the community the next two slides indicate the wide spectrum and large

Unknown speaker not human verified

number of design related awards and recognitions received by the district

Unknown speaker not human verified

since 1999. Our district is recognized locally, regionally, and nationally for

Unknown speaker not human verified

its ongoing development of award-winning construction projects in support of our

Unknown speaker not human verified

students, staff, and community. These accolades are in a large part a result

Unknown speaker not human verified

of the invaluable contribution and efforts of the project management team

Unknown speaker not human verified

in concert with our consulting partners and other district support departments. I

Unknown speaker not human verified

I have always said that our students' awards are our awards, and this evening was a good

Unknown speaker not human verified

example of the plethora of awards that the students receive.

Unknown speaker not human verified

In this case, I am proud to also say that these many and varied awards and recognitions

Unknown speaker not human verified

are the rewards for those who, with tremendous dedication, expertise, and professionalism,

Unknown speaker not human verified

work to regularly develop unparalleled learning environments for our students.

Unknown speaker not human verified

students. Many of the awards are value related, which validates the cost effective, quality

Unknown speaker not human verified

focused culture which the project management team and department exemplifies.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I trust that this presentation has given you a better comprehension of the role of the

Unknown speaker not human verified

project manager within my department and the work they do in support of our district. Our

Unknown speaker not human verified

Our extremely cost-effective model for project management is very well respected across the

Unknown speaker not human verified

state whereby we are often contacted as a resource by other districts.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Specifically as they build and modify their respective organizations, our project managers

Unknown speaker not human verified

are also contacted frequently to provide technical assistance and guidance.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The project managers provide leadership and valuable input within the A4LE, previously

Unknown speaker not human verified

called CEFPI, Southern Region Association. I feel tremendously proud and blessed to

Unknown speaker not human verified

be a part of this team of such talented and tremendously dedicated

Unknown speaker not human verified

individuals, a team which is well positioned to ensure that the

Unknown speaker not human verified

anticipated ongoing growth in KDISD over the next two decades is addressed

Unknown speaker not human verified

from a facility perspective in a very thorough professional manner with a high

Unknown speaker not human verified

level of technical and planning expertise. Thank you. I pass the baton

Unknown speaker not human verified

over to Kathy McDonald. Good evening President Griffin, board members and

Unknown speaker not human verified

Superintendent Fraley. Tonight I'm excited to show you the district

Unknown speaker not human verified

through the eyes of maintenance and operations. Each of our custodians clean

Unknown speaker not human verified

an area equal to 10, 2500 square foot homes each night, plus set up and clean up for approximately

Unknown speaker not human verified

50,000 events each year.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Our Grounds Department maintains over 2,300 acres of athletic fields, school grounds,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and purchased land, and does many other tasks, some of which I'll show you tonight in this

Unknown speaker not human verified

presentation.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Maintenance work, which includes preventive maintenance, routine work orders, special

Unknown speaker not human verified

projects and emergencies are tracked through the work order system the 2014-15 school year there

Unknown speaker not human verified

were 35,000 317 work orders completed and of those about 90% were in the preventive maintenance and

Unknown speaker not human verified

routine categories leaving a little less than 10% or 3422 work orders in the emergency category now

Unknown speaker not human verified

Now not all of these that were called in as emergencies actually turned out to be what

Unknown speaker not human verified

we would consider an emergency.

Unknown speaker not human verified

But each one had to initially be responded to as one.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Which means that somebody, at least one person from our team, sometimes more, had to stop

Unknown speaker not human verified

what they were doing immediately and go to the facility.

Unknown speaker not human verified

What they found when they arrived determined what additional manpower was required.

Unknown speaker not human verified

required.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So now that I've given you a quick glimpse of the year through our eyes, I'm going to

Unknown speaker not human verified

quickly share some of the things that we do that you may not be aware of.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I'll start with portables because there are so many steps that you may not even know are

Unknown speaker not human verified

involved.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Permits have to be acquired for bringing in new portables or relocating existing ones.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is a six to eight week process and depending on the county, a traffic study may be required

Unknown speaker not human verified

at a campus prior to the permit being issued. Here are electricians building

Unknown speaker not human verified

the service for the power at Griffin and Kilpatrick and running wire for the

Unknown speaker not human verified

power at Beckendorf and getting ready to set posts for porches at Seven Lakes

Unknown speaker not human verified

Junior High. Framing porches at Stanley and adding sidewalks for easier access

Unknown speaker not human verified

at Seven Lakes junior high this walkway at Stanley is typical of all of our

Unknown speaker not human verified

installations we cover the walkways with lit canopies we also must comply with

Unknown speaker not human verified

fire codes regarding spacing between the portables as well as spacing from the

Unknown speaker not human verified

school building itself our portables have fire alarms strobes our

Unknown speaker not human verified

extinguishers and intercoms and are not occupied until each one has been

Unknown speaker not human verified

inspected and approved by the fire marshal here is one of the completed

Unknown speaker not human verified

academic villages at Wood Creek Elementary now here at Katy ISD we are

Unknown speaker not human verified

fortunate that our natatorium specialist and one of our pool technicians are

Unknown speaker not human verified

certified scuba divers this is Steven working under the water working above

Unknown speaker not human verified

the water at Morton Ranch High School at under the water at Katy High School in

Unknown speaker not human verified

In the underwater shot, he was repairing the main drain without us having to drain the pool or call in contractors,

Unknown speaker not human verified

both of which would have been an additional expense to the district.

Unknown speaker not human verified

When a school is without water for whatever reason, we deliver water to drink and also to flush toilets.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Maintenance staff stays at the campus to assist until water is back on,

Unknown speaker not human verified

at which time they run water to clear the line clear the airs clear air from

Unknown speaker not human verified

the lines and check each fixture to make sure there is no problem we use a sewer

Unknown speaker not human verified

camera to run through the sewer lines to identify problem areas that we needed we

Unknown speaker not human verified

make repairs on fire hydrants located on our property this particular one was

Unknown speaker not human verified

located in the maid Creek complex we repair and repaint outfield fences at

Unknown speaker not human verified

the high school baseball fields a lot of time is spent in and around parking lots

Unknown speaker not human verified

in concrete excuse me allergies are

Unknown speaker not human verified

of course that's not a surprise since we have enough concrete in the district to

Unknown speaker not human verified

cover 256 football fields almost 15 million square feet of surface area

Unknown speaker not human verified

Here are the guys putting in an additional bike rack pad and sidewalk to access it at

Unknown speaker not human verified

Holland.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We paint miles of yellow and red curbs throughout the district and even an ambulance parking

Unknown speaker not human verified

space at Cinco Ranch High School.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We installed and tested the rock wall at Randolph.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And occasionally someone gets wet.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We maintain and make repairs on the pier at the OLC pond and when a tool is dropped our

Unknown speaker not human verified

Our guys have even been known to do a little noodling.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We work to remove any signs of vandalism as fast as possible,

Unknown speaker not human verified

even if it means working all night to dismantle and remove playground equipment that was set on fire.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And this is Andre.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Andre is the one and only finished carpenter and cabinetmaker for the district.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And believe me, he is very popular.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This guy can build anything and does a great job.

Unknown speaker not human verified

These are cabinets he made for Holland Elementary.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Sometimes our work takes us to a higher level,

Unknown speaker not human verified

like each summer when the custodians clean all the steel structure in high areas in the gyms, cafeterias, and hallways.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And we're really fortunate that we were able to purchase a used bucket truck in 2012,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and it's paid for itself in less than three years by not having to pay rental equipment.

Unknown speaker not human verified

equipment.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Since then we've been able to do annual inspections of parking lot lights, make repairs and replace

Unknown speaker not human verified

bulbs.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Now we don't have to wait until we get a large number of bulbs burned out to justify the

Unknown speaker not human verified

rental costs.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We also use it to repair flag poles like this one at the OLC.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We've even used it to replace the directional wind flags on the goalposts at Rhodes Stadium.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Our Grounds Department does a lot of things besides maintaining the grounds at all of

Unknown speaker not human verified

our facilities and handling all of the moving for the district here is made creek high schools field

Unknown speaker not human verified

a lot of time and attention goes into these fields to get them in this condition and keep them that

Unknown speaker not human verified

way playground fall zones at all elementary schools have to be checked and the mulch turned

Unknown speaker not human verified

and added and periodically replaced grounds builds and installs the swing gates like this one at maid

Unknown speaker not human verified

Creek Elementary to help control traffic at our facilities.

Unknown speaker not human verified

They also can take an area that looks like this first picture and by the end of the summer

Unknown speaker not human verified

have it looking like a park.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is one of our groundsmen top dressing the fields at Katy High School.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We even had a request from the counselor at Cimarron Elementary for them to participate

Unknown speaker not human verified

on career day and bring some of their specialized equipment.

Unknown speaker not human verified

equipment.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We clean and recoat the roofs on portables.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is the admin annex which houses Tike and PPCD.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We have an HVAC filter team of five.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Last year they changed 49,716 filters for that school year and they're on track to do

Unknown speaker not human verified

at least that many this year.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is those same guys, three of them working at Morton Ranch High School to try to get

Unknown speaker not human verified

the work done.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Tram spaces are nothing new for our HVAC techs.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Here they are changing out a compressor at Alexander.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. Gunnell mentioned about the highly qualified employees and that's one of our goals as well.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is not an easy task for our department of 707, but it's one we take very seriously.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Besides the district's mandatory training, our licensed positions are required to attend

Unknown speaker not human verified

classes for CEUs to keep their license current. We also provide training in

Unknown speaker not human verified

safety, emergency management, safe usage of equipment such as forklifts and

Unknown speaker not human verified

man lifts. At Central Maintenance we have a custodial training room with the same

Unknown speaker not human verified

restroom finishes, flooring and wall finishes that our schools have. This is

Unknown speaker not human verified

where our new custodians receive training on cleaning and disinfecting,

Unknown speaker not human verified

correct use of our cleaning chemicals, and all types of equipment usage.

Unknown speaker not human verified

When they report to their assigned campuses, they're well-trained and ready to work.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We also provide leadership training for our head and assistant head custodians

Unknown speaker not human verified

and those interested in moving up in the department.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We asked our police department to develop and conduct a safe driving class

Unknown speaker not human verified

for all of our employees that drive district vehicles.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We also had CPR training for all 700 employees,

Unknown speaker not human verified

employees, and it was taught in English and Spanish, so we were sure that everyone understood

Unknown speaker not human verified

fully and were able to take part in the hands-on practice and become certified.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So that's all I have for you tonight, but I do want to thank you for the opportunity

Unknown speaker not human verified

tonight to share a little bit about what we do every day.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And I am so fortunate to have such a dedicated team.

Unknown speaker not human verified

They help us to make our vision, our department vision statement, Making a Difference, come

Unknown speaker not human verified

true.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And now Mike Robinson.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Good evening, President Griffin, Board members, and Superintendent Fraley.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I'm proud to present a part of the operations update this evening.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We have often discussed numbers and statistics with you before.

Unknown speaker not human verified

However, this evening we would like to review a few programs that may not be as well known.

Unknown speaker not human verified

These programs are less publicized, but yield benefits that support the educational process.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This evening we will present information regarding the Nutrition and Food Service National School

Unknown speaker not human verified

Lunch Week program, Farm Fresh Fridays, and Grab and Go Breakfast initiatives.

Unknown speaker not human verified

These programs attempt to educate students on the importance of good nutrition while

Unknown speaker not human verified

making the process interactive and fun. We will showcase the creativity and community involvement

Unknown speaker not human verified

of the food service employees. We will also review the dynamic recruiting methods being used by the

Unknown speaker not human verified

transportation department to attract and retain bus drivers. These topics will provide you with

Unknown speaker not human verified

some additional information about these departments as we continue to develop a high quality workforce

Unknown speaker not human verified

and support services. You're likely aware of the size and scope of the KDISD

Unknown speaker not human verified

Nutrition and Food Service Department. We currently have about 600 employees. They

Unknown speaker not human verified

operate a budget of in excess of 30 million dollars per year. In 2014-15

Unknown speaker not human verified

they served approximately 7.4 million meals. Tonight we will present

Unknown speaker not human verified

information on the department that you may not be familiar with. In the fall of

Unknown speaker not human verified

each year, Katy ISD observes National School Lunch Week. This year a

Unknown speaker not human verified

competition between the campuses was held for designs created with food

Unknown speaker not human verified

products by the food service staff of food items that were contained in our

Unknown speaker not human verified

kitchens. The creativity of the designs was amazing. The following

Unknown speaker not human verified

The following slides represent the efforts of the food service staff and the winners of the competition.

Unknown speaker not human verified

First place went to Wolfe Elementary staff for the goat twins that were carved from watermelons and decorated with other food items from their kitchen.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Second place went to Martin Ranch Elementary staff for their creative design of a choo-choo.

Unknown speaker not human verified

and third place went to

Unknown speaker not human verified

the Wollman Elementary design of a wedding cake

Unknown speaker not human verified

made from various fruits.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Honorable mention went to the ESC cafeteria

Unknown speaker not human verified

staff. They were not eligible

Unknown speaker not human verified

for prizes because they have

Unknown speaker not human verified

access to more products in the

Unknown speaker not human verified

catering department.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It was, however, a beautiful creation of

Unknown speaker not human verified

fruit pizza and was enjoyed by

Unknown speaker not human verified

all at lunch that day.

Unknown speaker not human verified

In addition to the dedication and creativity

Unknown speaker not human verified

of the food service staff. They showed their community involvement. The local

Unknown speaker not human verified

food service association, Katie Association for School Nutrition,

Unknown speaker not human verified

combined with Katie Christian Ministries for a can drive. The food service

Unknown speaker not human verified

department turned it into a competition as always.

Unknown speaker not human verified

among the campuses and there was a total of 39 cases or approximately 1,500 items collected.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The winners were a tie for the high school between Katy High School and May Creek High School.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Junior high was Wood Creek, junior high in the elementary was Williams Elementary.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Another creative program that food service began this year was a Farm Fresh Fridays.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This program is encouraged by the Department of Agriculture and

Unknown speaker not human verified

and focuses on food items that are grown by local farmers.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The idea is to introduce elementary students to foods in their natural state.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Most students today have likely never seen food in its natural state

Unknown speaker not human verified

or known where it comes from. This particular display was for various

Unknown speaker not human verified

types of squashes. Student comments included the turban

Unknown speaker not human verified

squash looks like a hat, the white squash looks like a mushroom,

Unknown speaker not human verified

room where the white squash looks like a UFO.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This display involved various cabbages.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And this is a process in action.

Unknown speaker not human verified

For their efforts, the KDISD Nutrition and Food Service

Unknown speaker not human verified

Department was recognized in the Texas Department

Unknown speaker not human verified

of Agriculture.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This year, the Food Service Department

Unknown speaker not human verified

piloted a remote location breakfast

Unknown speaker not human verified

program at the campuses of Martin Ridge Elementary

Unknown speaker not human verified

and May Creek Junior High.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Breakfast is an important factor in children's learning ability and there was a need to increase breakfast participation.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Since children do not always enter their campus through the cafeteria, the food service department created various grab and go locations in these two campuses.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The results were an increase in breakfast served of 38% at Martin Ranch Elementary and 8% at May Creek Junior High from September to January year over year.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The program will be reviewed for expansion if it is deemed successful.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is a scene from a recent meeting of the School Nutrition Directors Association.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The association is comprised of food service directors in the region and is chaired by

Unknown speaker not human verified

our own Alyssa Deckard, assistant director.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This group collaborates with physical education and participates in developing policies for

Unknown speaker not human verified

nutrition and health.

Unknown speaker not human verified

In addition to this organization, the food service director, Donna Pittenger, and her

Unknown speaker not human verified

assistants serve on many committees and boards and are regularly recognized by being published

Unknown speaker not human verified

in various media, mentoring, or invited to present in conferences across the country.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Some notable groups they participate in are the Child Nutrition Advisory Committee for

Unknown speaker not human verified

for Region IV, the SHAC Executive Board, the School Nutrition Association, the Texas Association

Unknown speaker not human verified

of School Nutrition, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the Texas Department of Agriculture

Unknown speaker not human verified

Team Up for School Nutrition Success, and many others.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And they are highly involved in delivering the first class support department for KDISD.

Unknown speaker not human verified

You also like, you are also likely to know these facts about the Transportation Department.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We employ 640 employees.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Transportation Department budget is about $19 million and they drive about 3.6 million

Unknown speaker not human verified

miles a year.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The effect of the driver shortage is well known.

Unknown speaker not human verified

What you may not know that in response to the shortage, we repurposed the driver position

Unknown speaker not human verified

position to coordinate recruiting activities. Mr. Charlie Williams was chosen for this task and has done an outstanding job. Charlie brings a lot of

Unknown speaker not human verified

enthusiasm and creativity to this challenge and the following are some examples of that. In addition to helping coordinate job fairs, attending PTA meetings,

Unknown speaker not human verified

meetings and promoting transportation in the community, Charlie has been creating posters

Unknown speaker not human verified

for students to take home.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is an example of a recent take home poster.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is the most recent take home poster.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It was designed to be distributed right before the livestock show and rodeo.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The QR code on the poster allows those with a smart phone to link directly to the Transportation

Unknown speaker not human verified

Department Employment website.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The steer theme carried over to the Transportation Department in the

Unknown speaker not human verified

Livestock Show and Rodeo Parade.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is another view of our parade entry.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is a photo of the last job fair held at May Creek High School.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The fair was the best attended we have experienced with over 260 attendees.

Unknown speaker not human verified

attendees. Eighty-four were interested in the Transportation Department and over a hundred

Unknown speaker not human verified

were interested in food service. Maintenance and security were also represented and greeted

Unknown speaker not human verified

many applicants as well. Due in large part to the recruiting efforts of the Transportation

Unknown speaker not human verified

Department and Human Resources, we were able to recommend no changes to the transportation

Unknown speaker not human verified

transportation model for 2016 and 17. I might also mention that the ALC contract

Unknown speaker not human verified

approved by the board to transport homeless students has freed about 20

Unknown speaker not human verified

drivers to be used for daily routes. We're currently transporting about 37

Unknown speaker not human verified

students from as far away as Humble and Deer Park.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you for your time this evening.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Next up is Ms. Yolanda.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. Robinson, Mr. President.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Go ahead, Ms. Fox.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. Robinson, for everybody so far, we're trying not to interrupt because of the timing of the hour,

Unknown speaker not human verified

but I'm really enjoying this presentation because year after year you're keeping it fresh and those kinds of things.

Unknown speaker not human verified

But I just love what we're seeing here, especially like the competitions,

Unknown speaker not human verified

the friendly competitions between employees, you all are building.

Unknown speaker not human verified

You have families, and you take really good care of your family,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and you're showing that to us.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And we really appreciate it.

Unknown speaker not human verified

You know, with the construction and Ms. McDonald,

Unknown speaker not human verified

when you said that only 10% of your calls are emergency,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and then you said 3,944.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It's like, good grief, that's a lot of emergencies.

Unknown speaker not human verified

But it's only 10% of what, you know, those kinds of things.

Unknown speaker not human verified

and seeing that fruit competition and attending the breakfast or the school

Unknown speaker not human verified

lunch week that we did I sat with mr. Ganell at school lunch and seeing those

Unknown speaker not human verified

competitions you know the fruit I mean it's it's it's just a little something

Unknown speaker not human verified

extra but it just makes it feel like family and I'm really enjoying the

Unknown speaker not human verified

presentation tonight in the transportation and we're very blessed to

Unknown speaker not human verified

collect us that went in the rodeo parade we're very blessed to have a talented

Unknown speaker not human verified

group of directors in these departments and it's a pleasure to work with them

Unknown speaker not human verified

good evening president Griffin school board members and superintendent Fraley

Unknown speaker not human verified

I would like to start out by introducing my family I have several members of my

Unknown speaker not human verified

management team here at least more skip Baskerville Connie Davis Andrea Arthur

Unknown speaker not human verified

and Erica Nugent and we also have a friend of the family Christy Cross.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We're very excited about reporting out tonight as most of you know we recently

Unknown speaker not human verified

lost a member of our family who contributed very heavily to one of the

Unknown speaker not human verified

items I'm going to present tonight so that is very um very emotional moment

Unknown speaker not human verified

for me so I hope I don't stumble here with you. So first off we're going to

Unknown speaker not human verified

to start out by, we said we were not going to give any statistical data, we were going

Unknown speaker not human verified

to talk about initiatives, but we always have to start as soon as I pull the keyboard out

Unknown speaker not human verified

and go to my next page.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We always have to start out by giving you some statistical data, so we're going to talk

Unknown speaker not human verified

about application totals, highly qualified, workforce fingerprinting, and our sick leave

Unknown speaker not human verified

pool.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Over the course of seven months from July 2015 to January of 2016, we had a total of

Unknown speaker not human verified

8,569 applicants apply for positions in KDISD.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Let me go back one second.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Of the 8,569, we employed 1,495 over those seven months, with that being a total of 1,002 full and part-time employees and 493 substitute employees.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So we really focus hard on having a high-quality workforce.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is an initiative that we put in place at the beginning of the school year,

Unknown speaker not human verified

year. And we try to combat that through retention and improvement efforts by working with our

Unknown speaker not human verified

campuses and departments. What we always want to do is maintain a high quality staff. Once

Unknown speaker not human verified

we hire them, we would like to keep them. So we focus with giving constructive feedback

Unknown speaker not human verified

and support to employees when they're in struggling situations. We also do training and support

Unknown speaker not human verified

for the hiring managers and principals. And we do that by having staff review meetings,

Unknown speaker not human verified

which I think have been going very well this year for the first time.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Part of our initiatives we do in-state job fairs and out-of-state fairs.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We've had 26 in-state fairs, which we have increased because our data shows that most of our

Unknown speaker not human verified

candidates are coming from in-state now. We only have eight out-of-state, which include

Unknown speaker not human verified

Illinois, East and West Michigan, Penn State, University of Louisiana, LSU, and Oklahoma State.

Unknown speaker not human verified

More initiatives is obviously our KTISD job fair.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We have the student teacher program reception, summer intern programs and new teacher receptions

Unknown speaker not human verified

that we usually host in the fall.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So our next two items, what I consider kind of a big deal.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I wonder who usually says that.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I think that's Ms. Fox.

Unknown speaker not human verified

These are two items that we are very passionate about.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The first one is fingerprinting.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We were having a huge delay in fingerprinting our projected employees.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The state obviously mandates this.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Our local site closed down, so we decided that it was imperative to KDISD and our future

Unknown speaker not human verified

employees that we become a fingerprinting site.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Before I go into the details of that, I would like to thank Mike Robinson because he came

Unknown speaker not human verified

up with the funds in order for us to become a fingerprinting site.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It is a one-time cost.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It is cost neutral to the district.

Unknown speaker not human verified

At this point, we are going to keep it.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We've gone through this process, and if we can maintain it, we have the manpower we can look at maybe offering this to outside of KDISD,

Unknown speaker not human verified

people that are applying for jobs outside of KDISD.

Unknown speaker not human verified

But to start out with, the police department, I'd also like to give thanks to Chief Jinks and his staff because they're going to maintain this.

Unknown speaker not human verified

My department did the footwork to get it off the ground, but we're not going to be the

Unknown speaker not human verified

ones overseeing it.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Our police department will oversee it.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So it's going to be a joint effort.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We're very excited about it.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We heard a lot of complaints and we listened.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We had a lot of campuses and departments, mainly our auxiliary departments who were

Unknown speaker not human verified

suffering because we had a hard time getting those employees or applicants, may I say,

Unknown speaker not human verified

fingerprinted in order to start on time.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We actually lost a lot of good candidates because of that.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And because of that we decided as a team we would sit down and discuss this and find out what's most important to us

Unknown speaker not human verified

And what's most important is getting these applicants fingerprinted so they can start working KDISD

Unknown speaker not human verified

So we're really really excited about becoming a fingerprinting site

Unknown speaker not human verified

I don't think we're quite ready yet

Unknown speaker not human verified

But I I would say probably in the next two months the equipment has been ordered everything is in place

Unknown speaker not human verified

So we're just waiting for them to deliver it to the police department

Unknown speaker not human verified

Next initiative which is

Unknown speaker not human verified

Very time consuming.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And that's where Christy, when I introduced Christy, the team that's here tonight, Christy,

Unknown speaker not human verified

Connie and Andrea are very, very instrumental.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is not something that Yolanda can do alone.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We have a huge team.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Matter of fact, Kelly was able to make it tonight, but Kelly Yang from technology and

Unknown speaker not human verified

her staff have been truly, truly helpful in us putting this project in place.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So what we want to do here is present to you an excuse, because in the next slide you're

Unknown speaker not human verified

going to see where it says sick leave bank, and I didn't catch that error until today.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It's either going to be a sick leave pool or it's going to be a sick leave bank.

Unknown speaker not human verified

They work the same way except we're just going to decide which word we're going to use here.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Right now, KDISD operates off of a donated sick leave policy.

Unknown speaker not human verified

If an employee is out on medical leave and they have exhausted all of their leave, they

Unknown speaker not human verified

can qualify for donated days.

Unknown speaker not human verified

But in order to qualify for those donated days, you have to have colleagues who are

Unknown speaker not human verified

willing to donate you days.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We're looking at changing that to a sick leave bank, which is what I would prefer to call

Unknown speaker not human verified

it.

Unknown speaker not human verified

If you look at this slide, Katy ISD and Aldine ISD are the only two districts who are currently

Unknown speaker not human verified

in the surrounding area that's currently operating off of the donated policies.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Most districts have moved to the sick leave policies such as Lamar, Cy Fair, Houston,

Unknown speaker not human verified

Fort Bend and A-Leaf.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So we would like to model those same, actually that same program here in Katy ISD.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So what I have here is a side-by-side chart of the difference between the sick leave bank.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It's not going to give all of the details tonight, but it's actually the cover of the biggest differences between the two.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is something I think we as a department and as a team are very, very passionate about.

Unknown speaker not human verified

we think our employees will get more out of this bank versus the donated days.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The main difference is to be a member of the bank, you must donate a day.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So as long as you give a day each school year, and we're going to do that every,

Unknown speaker not human verified

I think at the beginning of each fiscal year, every employee must date one,

Unknown speaker not human verified

am I right if I say personal?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Local, local sick day.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Sorry about that.

Unknown speaker not human verified

You must donate one local sick day in order to be a member of the bank.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It's going to be limited to 30 days per year and I know the chart is going to show donated

Unknown speaker not human verified

days is limited to 90.

Unknown speaker not human verified

When you're donating, it's your colleague's giving, you can get up to 90.

Unknown speaker not human verified

In order for us to sustain a healthy bank, we have to max it somewhere.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We decided and we looked at the other districts and we're modeling the 30 days, which is a

Unknown speaker not human verified

maximum of 30 days per year.

Unknown speaker not human verified

You can have two occurrences and still max out at 60 days.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We will put a committee together.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It will be very anonymous because this is very sensitive when we're talking about someone's

Unknown speaker not human verified

medical history.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We'll have a committee that we'll put together and the committee, myself, I will not be a

Unknown speaker not human verified

voting member of that committee.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I cannot based on the policies.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I cannot be a voting member of the committee, but I'll have someone in human resources on

Unknown speaker not human verified

that committee.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We're looking at someone from risk management, maybe the nursing side of the house.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Actually, the recommendations from other districts is to even put an auxiliary employee on your

Unknown speaker not human verified

committee, a teacher.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So it's going to be a very diverse group.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So the committee will determine who qualifies for the sick leave bank.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So you can apply for the bank and you can qualify up to those 30 days per occurrence.

Unknown speaker not human verified

But the committee will make those decisions.

Unknown speaker not human verified

What I'll see in any names, it will be the background of the illness and what qualifies

Unknown speaker not human verified

that candidate will have a list of rules that will make you qualified for the sick leave bank.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I think it's very, very important to know that to start out with the bank. It's going to be very

Unknown speaker not human verified

difficult to maintain it if we don't get the days from employees. So we did a survey. I think we put

Unknown speaker not human verified

the survey together probably six months ago. We surveyed leadership and we also surveyed employee

Unknown speaker not human verified

roundtable and it came back favorable. I think in leadership, that particular leadership, we probably

Unknown speaker not human verified

If I remember right, we had 150 people there and 98 voted that they would prefer the sick

Unknown speaker not human verified

leave bank.

Unknown speaker not human verified

In employee roundtable, I think there were 60 employees there and 58 voted in favor of

Unknown speaker not human verified

the sick leave bank.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So we think across the district favorably the sick leave bank is more favored.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It tends to put people in a situation where they don't have to have friends in order to

Unknown speaker not human verified

qualify for a day if you put a day in the bank you can qualify for a day or up to 30 days or

Unknown speaker not human verified

up to 60 if you have two occurrences in the in the school year right now i think the donated days is

Unknown speaker not human verified

more dependent on whether you have someone who's willing to give you a day has it been working

Unknown speaker not human verified

fine in the 11 years that i've been in kt isd yes however when i first came to katie that was one of

Unknown speaker not human verified

of the policies that I looked at and thought it could change.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. Gunnell and I talked about it recently, and we both agreed that maybe looking at other

Unknown speaker not human verified

districts, and when we went out and looked at the other districts, the sick leave bank

Unknown speaker not human verified

is probably the most popular way to go.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So this is a brief presentation on the sick leave bank.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We're planning on bringing a policy to you in April for your consideration.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We're working very diligently with our technology team to make sure that we can handle this.

Unknown speaker not human verified

and I think we have agreed team even if the system does not handle it in the way

Unknown speaker not human verified

that we see fit that we're willing to do this even without the system working for

Unknown speaker not human verified

us because we are that passionate about making sure our employees can get the

Unknown speaker not human verified

days that they need when they're out ill so we are willing to do as much manual

Unknown speaker not human verified

work if we have to we're hoping that our system can maintain it but we know

Unknown speaker not human verified

sometimes our own policies you can have a system but the way our policies are

Unknown speaker not human verified

written it may not accommodate all of the calendars that we have but the team

Unknown speaker not human verified

that that we put together to work behind this project I think it's putting

Unknown speaker not human verified

everything they can into it and want to make sure it's a it's a great product at

Unknown speaker not human verified

the end our goal is to have it effective July 1 we will not rush it we'll make

Unknown speaker not human verified

sure that everything is accurate before we roll it out but I think that this is

Unknown speaker not human verified

something that we can do by July 1 we will continue to examine all of the

Unknown speaker not human verified

the things that we need to to make sure it's going to be the best policy that we have in

Unknown speaker not human verified

place.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Until we have this policy active, we will continue with the donated days policy.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And if someone is currently out on donated days on July 1 when the sick leave bank, we

Unknown speaker not human verified

will work through that with those employees.

Unknown speaker not human verified

No one will miss a day.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We will roll this out and make sure it's done in a very effective and efficient manner.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Any questions?

Unknown speaker not human verified

And my last slide, and I forgot because I'm not even going to read this whole definition,

Unknown speaker not human verified

but behind that, even the donated days have a catastrophic illness definition.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It will be a little bit more stringent with the sick leave pool because you can't just

Unknown speaker not human verified

allow people to take days out of the pool for, I would say, a big toenail ache.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It doesn't have to be a catastrophic illness in order for us to maintain this pool over

Unknown speaker not human verified

a long period of time.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We want to be able to sustain it year after year, and I am grateful to say that we've

Unknown speaker not human verified

We've had some employees that retired recently, and we did ask for donations to the bank,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and I think right now 180 days that we've had from some retirees who've donated some days to us

Unknown speaker not human verified

for us to start our bank out, so we're not starting out empty right now, so that's a good thing.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And as employees leave up until July, we will continue to ask for those days if they can give them to us.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And then from that point on, the only time you can donate at retirement, you can only max out at five,

Unknown speaker not human verified

even if you're retiring but right now we're taking whatever we can get to

Unknown speaker not human verified

start our pool so we can have a hefty pool and then we're hoping all of our

Unknown speaker not human verified

employees join in and think that this is a successful policy and want to donate a

Unknown speaker not human verified

day to the bank okay thank you so much

Unknown speaker not human verified

good evening president Griffin board members superintendent Farley thank you

Unknown speaker not human verified

for allowing me to present my part of this. I want to start off by saying what

Unknown speaker not human verified

an honor it is to be in the operations section of this district. I mean after

Unknown speaker not human verified

all look what I'm following and the leadership we have is outstanding. I'm

Unknown speaker not human verified

going to present this very few statistics to you. I'm going to tell you

Unknown speaker not human verified

a little bit about our community outreach and engagement and then some of

Unknown speaker not human verified

the special services we offer. These are some of the statistics. I'm not going to

Unknown speaker not human verified

go through each one of them. You have a copy of this, but the one I

Unknown speaker not human verified

wanted to focus on mostly was the training hours, if y'all will look at

Unknown speaker not human verified

that. Of the 13,578 total training hours for this two-year period I have listed

Unknown speaker not human verified

here, only approximately 3,400 of that were mandated by the state. So you can

Unknown speaker not human verified

can see we go far and above what the state mandates us to train. By doing this, it allows

Unknown speaker not human verified

us to hire and maintain a quality workforce. They're very well trained.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I'm going to tell you a little bit on our community outreach and engagement part of

Unknown speaker not human verified

this. We have several officers that participate in the mentors program. We participate with

Unknown speaker not human verified

with Miller Career Center for criminal justice interns.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Each year they provide us with three interns

Unknown speaker not human verified

that ride with us for the second semester.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And they're exploring a career in law enforcement or law.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We also have a Santa Cops program.

Unknown speaker not human verified

As you can see, we were able to assist 561 students

Unknown speaker not human verified

this past year.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Now having said that, we also help out Texas Children's Hospital West Campus with things

Unknown speaker not human verified

that we're not able to, you know, sometimes people will just bring by toys and drop them

Unknown speaker not human verified

off but they're not, they don't actually sponsor a child.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Well those toys we use to supplement some of the packages we get but if we don't use

Unknown speaker not human verified

use them then we help out Texas Children's Hospital and they really

Unknown speaker not human verified

appreciate it we also participate in community

Unknown speaker not human verified

educational opportunities from time to time when we're when we're requested to

Unknown speaker not human verified

do so we put on programs for different organizations a lot of it we've gotten a

Unknown speaker not human verified

lot of requests lately about internet safety and we do a lot of that these are

Unknown speaker not human verified

These are the criminal justice interns that we have for this semester.

Unknown speaker not human verified

You know kids, and police officers too, like to take silly pictures and that's what it

Unknown speaker not human verified

is.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is our Santa Cops program.

Unknown speaker not human verified

If any of you, most all of you all, I think all of you all have been to the law enforcement

Unknown speaker not human verified

center and seen the training room we have.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It's a fairly good sized room.

Unknown speaker not human verified

room. There's barely room to move in that room the day before we pass out the gifts.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is us passing out the gifts the day of distribution. Liz Locke, whose picture is

Unknown speaker not human verified

in that second picture there, she devotes a lot of time and effort into this program.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It's her baby. She puts in a countless number of hours above and beyond her work day to

Unknown speaker not human verified

to get make this program successful we were invited this year from the Harris

Unknown speaker not human verified

County Sheriff's Office to participate with them in a town hall meeting which

Unknown speaker not human verified

we held at May Creek High School it was it was very successful detective Shannon

Unknown speaker not human verified

Taylor with our IACAC division which is Internet Crimes Against Children put on

Unknown speaker not human verified

a presentation and I think she opened a lot of eyes not only to the parents and the patrons

Unknown speaker not human verified

that were there but there were quite a few deputy sheriffs there that had no idea.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is our Safe Schools Parent Academy. Mr. Brummer who's in the audience tonight does an

Unknown speaker not human verified

outstanding job with this. These are parents and patrons that come to learn about the different

Unknown speaker not human verified

aspects of what we do to keep schools safe. We participate in community events

Unknown speaker not human verified

as much as we can. We participated in three parades. The one on the left is

Unknown speaker not human verified

Sheriff Nells invited all agencies in Fort Bend County to

Unknown speaker not human verified

participate in a walk of unity in the Fort Bend County Fair parade. So we

Unknown speaker not human verified

We walk the three-mile parade route, as you can see.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The one on the right is Rice Harvest.

Unknown speaker not human verified

That's Jeff Martinez driving our car.

Unknown speaker not human verified

As you can see, we clearly love our jobs.

Unknown speaker not human verified

These are some of the special services we participate in.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Houston Metro Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force,

Unknown speaker not human verified

Harris County Multi-Agency Gang Task Force,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Houston Metro Internet Crowns Against Children Task Force, as you know, is a group of law enforcement agencies that work on the Internet to catch child predators.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And we've run one sting of our own, and we got 23 that night, or those two nights.

Unknown speaker not human verified

and we anticipate on running another one very soon.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Houston Metro, this is Officer Muniz, and that's Detective Taylor.

Unknown speaker not human verified

She also is very loyal to her job.

Unknown speaker not human verified

She puts in countless hours participating with Fort Bend County District Attorney's Office

Unknown speaker not human verified

and they assist our agency on catching these guys.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is them putting on a public presentation to the public.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Harris County Multi-Agency Gang Task Force.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We have one officer assigned to that.

Unknown speaker not human verified

They work gangs within Harris County.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We're one of the only two school districts that actually have an officer assigned to it.

Unknown speaker not human verified

There are several other districts that belong to the, that participate with it, but they

Unknown speaker not human verified

don't have officers assigned to it right now.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is shown to be very, very beneficial to us.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We were able to thwart probably four or five different gang activities that we knew were

Unknown speaker not human verified

going to take place, and we were able to stop them before they did.

Unknown speaker not human verified

just by a phone call we can have you know six or seven detectives in a school that are experienced

Unknown speaker not human verified

in gang investigations FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force this is a I sit on the executive board of

Unknown speaker not human verified

the Joint Terrorism Task Force this allows us to get real-time information as

Unknown speaker not human verified

soon as the Brussels thing took place the other day I got emails so it allows

Unknown speaker not human verified

us to get real-time information on this type of and that's the end of mine

Unknown speaker not human verified

That's the end of our formal presentation.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Hopefully we painted a picture of a professional organization that really tries to be quality driven,

Unknown speaker not human verified

that tries to be efficient, but most importantly has a passion for our students and for our community.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So we're happy to entertain any questions you may have, and if you have none, we're prepared to go home.

Alton Frailey not human verified

Mr. Adams?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Just, Mr. Gunnell, and to your staff,

Unknown speaker not human verified

is the fact that we are in excess of a $500 million organization

Unknown speaker not human verified

in terms of a budget and 73,000 students, 9,000 employees,

Unknown speaker not human verified

I mean, this is, as Ms. Fox says, this is a big deal.

Unknown speaker not human verified

But it's kudos to your operations department,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and and you know it takes a lot of effort I mean I know that there was some

Unknown speaker not human verified

fun things in here but it's a lot of effort from everything from you know

Unknown speaker not human verified

personnel to operations and just watching those guys you know run the

Unknown speaker not human verified

wires and all that it's just a pretty pretty amazing deal it just you know

Unknown speaker not human verified

makes us all very proud of the fact that that you guys do a great job under under

Unknown speaker not human verified

your leadership and and the and the group that you have working for you so

Unknown speaker not human verified

So thank you for the job you do.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you for that acknowledgement.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And I'll say it's what they did.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And if you were asking what they thought, they'd say it's what they did,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and it works down the line there.

Unknown speaker not human verified

But thank you, sir.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. Fraley.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. President, trustees, I want to just, again, thank Mr. Connell.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And this is just an outstanding team of folks,

Unknown speaker not human verified

professionals who will do whatever it takes to make that difference every day.

Unknown speaker not human verified

these are

Unknown speaker not human verified

folks who see what needs to be done and they go about getting it done. They don't sit around

Unknown speaker not human verified

twiddling their thumbs waiting to be told and directed to do things. They are very professional.

Unknown speaker not human verified

They're spot on with what they do and we cannot be who we are without this division. These

Unknown speaker not human verified

folks really are the foundation of our success as a district overall. All that they do and

Unknown speaker not human verified

I can't thank these folks enough. So please tell all your teammates, I really appreciate

Unknown speaker not human verified

all that they do is recognize appreciate it it is a critical essential element kdsg's quality thank
