The board met earlier this evening in closed meeting. Any action arising from discussions in a closed meeting must be taken in a subsequent open meeting. This is a meeting open to the public, not a meeting of the public. There are students and other guests present. To maintain decorum, respectful behavior is expected. Disruptive behavior and or comments will not be allowed. KDSD Board of Trustees meets monthly in a regular meeting, generally to receive reports from the staff and to take action on recommendations from the Superintendent. Whereas there may not be lengthy discussions or a litany of questions tonight, please know that we have had the agenda for over a week. As a Board, we have reviewed each agenda item in a public work study session with the administrative team where we were able to ask and receive answers to our questions. Thus, as a Board, we should have appropriate knowledge and should be prepared for our responses regarding the content of this meeting tonight. Mr. Fraley, will you verify that we are in compliance with the provisions of the Texas Open Meetings Law in regard to the notice for this meeting? Mr. President, we are in compliance. The first item is
dealing with employee contracts. Mr. President. Mr. Griffin. As you enter the doors of Bonnie Holland Elementary School, favorable smiles await your entrance at the front office. But this is just the commencement of your great adventure of our school. In the library, prepare to be enchanted by its books of significance beyond your reach. As you arrive to the kindergarten hallway, get ready to be astounded by the intelligent youngsters' minds comprehending intensive skills necessary for success. Through first to fourth grade, there is no border to what great phenomena you will encounter, learn, and perceive. Then welcome to fifth grade, where you will find fantastic occurrences, such as the fifth graders obtaining skills for their first year of junior high, or retaining proficiencies for their last year of elementary school. Holland truly allows all of its students and teachers to reach their fullest potential and allows their dreams to become a reality.
Did you do a great job? Yeah! You know what is so amazing? You did so well speaking in front of all of these people. That is quite an accomplishment. So we have two things for you. First is this certificate just for you. But what is really cool is this little bag. evening president Mahalski board members and superintendent Riley each year the HEB excellence and education awards celebrate public school professionals and school districts whose leadership and education inspire a love of learning and students of all backgrounds and abilities this year Katie ISD was selected as one of six finalists for the HEB excellence and education award in the large district category and was awarded $5,000 Katie ISD was selected for this award based on the district's commitment to student achievement through innovative programs parent and community involvement and professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators at this time I would like to ask KTISD Superintendent Alton Fraley to come forward and accept this award on behalf of the district. Congratulations on this outstanding achievement.

Good evening, President Mihalski, Board members, and Superintendent Fraley. The Texas Education Agency recently named Stevens Elementary a Title I reward school for both high performance and high progress. High performance schools are identified as Title I schools with distinctions based on reading and math performance. High Progress schools are Title I schools in the top 25% in annual improvement and or a school in the top 25% of those demonstrating the ability to close performance gaps based on system safeguards. Stevens Elementary is now one of 190 schools in Texas with a high performance designation and one of only 218 with a high progress designation for for the 2014-15 school year. At this time, I would like to call forward Stephanie Vaughn, principal of Stevens Elementary, to accept this award on behalf of her campus. Please join me in congratulating Mrs. Vaughn on this outstanding accomplishment.

Scott is from Beckendorf Junior High. He teaches concepts of engineering and technology at Beckendorf. Outside of the classroom, Lytle sponsors the Beckendorf Junior High Science Olympiad team, serves on the Science Olympiad State Executive Board, and is actively involved in his church. Congratulations to KDISD's 2015 District-Wide Teachers of the Year.

After noticing a student was choking during lunch, Cutliffe administered the Heimlich maneuver in order to save the student's life. this past spring the seven lakes high school wind symphony was invited to perform at the 2015 music for all national concert festival the nation's most prestigious festival for school instrumental music ensembles the seven lakes wind symphony was only was one of only 40 high school and middle school concert bands and percussion ensembles from across the nation selected to perform at the festival in addition they were one of 16 high school ensembles to be accepted in the featured ensemble division we will now play a brief video of their performance at the festival

congratulations on this outstanding achievement next we will recognize KTIS DS Jason national Argonaut adventure participants Jason learning is a nonprofit organization that connects students to real science and exploration funded by Chevron students and teachers and KTIS D are able to access Jason and learning materials in and outside of the classroom each year students and teachers across the nation are invited to participate in the Argonaut adventure program and last month two of our own were selected Morton Ranch junior high science teacher Kim Thompson and eighth grade student Patrick Schumacher were selected as two of only 28 individuals nationwide to participate in the Jason National Argonaut Adventure.

Tompkins High School, Seven Lakes High School, Cinco Ranch Junior High and Beckendorf Junior High took top honors at the annual Science Olympiad State Tournament in April and advanced to the national tournament in Nebraska. The Science Olympiad is one of the most prestigious science, technology, engineering and mathematics competitions in the nation. This is new this year. I came to the wrong spot. I apologize. Good evening, President Mahalski and our board members and Superintendent Fraley. It is my honor to be here tonight to present our salutatorian and valedictorian. We'll begin the evening with our salutatorian at Cinco Ranch High School for the class of 2015. 2015. Her name is Jenny Xiao and she currently has a GPA, a paltry GPA of 4.8033. Yeah, that's kind of impressive, I agree. I would like to take a moment, if I could, to introduce her parents her father is Alan he he if you there you are and her mother is Lee Xiao so we'd like to recognize those folks her mom and dad if we could get a round of applause for a couple of things to share with you about Jenny she is a president of mu alpha theta vice president National Honor Society and on the board of directors for the kilometers to combat cancer she is a national merit finalist and has received the CRHS special recognition outstanding student award and the KISD student excellence award in the area of math outside of school Jenny interned at blade energy partners and works at Mathnasium Learning Center. She was named Superstar Fundraiser in the BP MS150 and along with her team, a Summit Diplomat in the Pete Conrad Spirit of Innovation Challenge. In her free time, which I can't believe she has free time, I guess on Sunday afternoon from like two to four, she enjoys snowboarding, which I know she has to travel for that, horseback riding and singing. Jenny's going to some school back east you may have heard of it's called Yale University and so it is my honor to present Jenny Xiao. Jenny if you will come forward to receive your oh this is what happens when you read the script so you don't you don't look up so Jenny we're very proud and honored to have you U.S. Cinco Ranch's salutatorian. Now I would like to introduce our valedictorian. This young man's name is Hao-Chen Peng, and Hao-Chen's parents hopefully are here this evening. Cho-Wei Peng is his dad and his mother, Huo-Min Cho. Are our parents here tonight? They are not. Okay, a little bit. Oh, I forgot to mention his GPA as the valedictorian. It is four point eight one zero three Again, very impressive How chin is the officer of science Olympiad and a member of the Cougar band Council? He has received the National Merit Commended Award along with the National AP Scholar Award Outside of school how chin works extensively within his church participating as a Sunday school teacher along with being involved in his praise team Al Chin will attend Johns Hopkins University as a biomedical engineering major and will be following the pre-med track. I've heard a little bit about Johns Hopkins. I think that's a good pre-med track to go.

Good evening, I'm Rick Hull, principal of Katy High School, and it's my honor and pleasure to present the valedictorian and salutatorian for Katy High School. Our salutatorian is Mr. Manuel Marine.
Marine. He will be graduating with a 4.7586 GPA and will be attending Texas A&M in the fall where he plans to study biomedical engineering. He's been active in many clubs and organizations while at Katy High School, including National Honor Society, MU Alpha Theta Vice President, Science Olympiad Vice President, and the bowling team. Manuel has been awarded the National Hispanic Recognition Scholarship and the Lechner Scholarship. Manuel is the son of Manuel and Norma Marine. I'm not sure if they're here this evening. She is the daughter of Richard and Amanda Baxter, and I know that I saw them earlier if you'd please stand.

Fatima is graduating with a 4.77 GPA. She will be majoring in chemical engineering in the Honors College at the University of Houston. While at May Creek, she's been involved in the Muslim Student Union, CLE club, Asian Student Union, Environmental Club, and is the president of National Honor Society. She received a Tier 1 scholarship in the Houston Livestock Rodeo Metropolitan Scholarship. In the future, Fatima hopes to create technologies to promote sustainability and global health. Kevin graduates from Morton Ranch High School with a GPA of 4.7097. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the National Art Honor Society, the Science National Honor Society, and several clubs. Kevin spends his free time watching anime and playing video games, chess, and soccer. He will be attending the University of Houston in the fall and majoring in psychology. He hopes to become a clinical psychologist where he can have a direct impact on patient lives. Kevin is joined here tonight by his mother, Odalis Ahn. Miss Ahn, can you stand?

In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, going out for a run, or just taking a nap. By the way, I did ask that today, how long are those naps, and she said minimum three hours. In the fall, Jenna will be attending the University of Texas at Austin, where she will major in psychology. She hopes one day to be an industrial organizational psychologist. Okay, trustees, I'll direct your attention to the report section of our agenda tonight. Now, we have a very special report, and as you know, we had the reception earlier for for our foundation grant winners, which was quite exciting. And I'd like to welcome Mr. Ken Yonda, president of the board of directors of the KDISD Education Foundation.

Thank you very much, President Mikulski and other members of the board of trustees. As we said, I'm Ken Yonda and I'm here tonight as the president of the Katy ISD Education Foundation and each year our memorandum of understanding between the Education Foundation and the Board of Trustees indicates that we should give our annual report so I have about a 45 minute report with slides to give you all tonight since we're running a little bit ahead of schedule seriously this is the third year of fundraising activity that we've had for the for the Education Foundation and it's been another wonderfully successful year. If you'll remember our mission is to unite the community in making targeted investments in our schools and that's exactly what we've been doing. Although our fiscal year doesn't end until August 31st, we're actually just about wrapping up our work for this fiscal year and starting to plan for next year. Some of the real significant achievements that we've had this year. First is that Ms. Fox has been our representative from the Board of Trustees, so thank you very much for your support, all members of the Board, and especially Mrs. Fox.
We've also had an outstanding Board Development Committee that has worked very hard to continue to bring new community leaders to our Board. And we have a board now of over 30 people from throughout the community that help us to provide support And and guidance for for our foundation. I also have to thank mr. Fraley and dr Caskey and mr. Smith and other administrators For for all their support, but most importantly Janet Tice with with whom we would not be here today So thank you very much Janet
I'd also like to report that as we've moved into our third year this year, we continue to appreciate the support that KIC has given us in in-kind contributions in that we have rent space here in the office and support from some of the other administrative staff, but we're really proud of the fact that we've begun to start paying our own way this year in terms of expenses, and so we've not required any additional funds from the district this year, which we're very proud of. In fact, this year we've done very well from a fundraising standpoint. We raised over $270,000 this year, and that's a continuation of some of our original three-year ground-baking investors. We've also added some new multi-year Keystone investors. investors. We had two amazing fundraising events and those of you in the audience who have not been to our fundraising events, not students but adults, we have a great event at Fireflies and Food Trucks last September and planning on doing that again next September and our Jazz with a Katy Flair program. These are adult only events, I will just repeat, but we welcome people to attend those events next year. We also had another amazing $50,000 grant from BP, our original cornerstone investor support to support STEM programs. We received grants from teachers this year of over $550,000, the request. We weren't, no applause yet because we were able to fund about 220,000 of those. You can applaud now.
And those $220,000 in grants went to 181 teachers on 30 different campuses. That's important to us because we want to make sure that we support as many teachers as we possibly can. And these grants impacted virtually all areas of both elementary and secondary curriculum. That's two more campuses than we did last year. Last year we did 28 campuses. This year 30 campuses. Next year we hope to increase it to even more campuses. 21 more teachers than last year. And probably the most amazing thing to me as one of the people that's been here from the very beginning of the foundation is that in our first three years of grants we've done just slightly more than $500,000 in grants to teachers which is just amazing and that's worth another round of applause. 518,000 in three years.
So we're very proud of the way that we've been able to support teachers throughout the district. But before I turn it over to Janet, who's going to quickly recognize those teachers, I do want to thank the hardworking board that we have. And we have board members as well as members of our various committees that are here tonight I would really like to have all of our board members and other committee members stand and be recognized very quickly
And with that I'm going to turn it over to Janet to talk a little bit more

Ms. Mr. President, members of the Board, and Mr. Fraley, it's an honor and a privilege to represent the KDIC Education Foundation, its Board and committee members, and these fine teachers. I have with me tonight Michael Moore, Senior Director of Communication and External Affairs and Rea Viso, Director of Communications and External Affairs from BP. They for the second year have been our cornerstone investor and given us $50,000 to fund Katie Icete Teacher Grants. Yes that deserves a round of applause.
We have had a tremendous, we're just so grateful for the time that we've spent with these guys this past school year. They have gone into our schools to see their grants in action. They have told our stories, they have talked to our teachers, they have been not just donors but personal supporters of KDISD and the work that our teachers are doing in the classroom. So I'm personally thrilled to get to work with these guys again this year. They've already named their grants for this year, the grants that they will fund from our Inspiring Imagination grant program, and this is the night they get to shake all their hands. welcome miss Hayes thank you very much yeah as you mentioned my name is Holly Hayes and I am a homeowner in the Katy ISD community my son attends Walman Elementary so I do have a child at the school district getting I'm gonna go ahead and read so don't get nervous and forget what I'm trying to say good evening KD IST board members my name is Holly Hayes and I am the mother of Wyatt Vaughn a fifth grader at Walman Elementary I am here to bring to your attention something that happened on April 27th my son arrived at school that day there was a substitute in his classroom dressed in a black burka that covered her entire body as well as most of her face there are several reasons why this is a clear violation of the Katie ISD handbook number one the handbook clearly states that no hats are allowed something that covers your entire head absolutely constitutes a hat number two dress code also states that teachers and substitutes should dress professionally being covered from head to toe was not professional it was a distraction that day because many children in the classroom to get marks. It was not conducive to the learning process at school.
Number three, the Berkham makes a religious statement and
promotes their belief system. This is clearly against KDISD's position on religion in a school based on page 16 of our handbook. I quote, KDISD is committed committed to the constitutional principle of separation of church and state. Board policy makes it clear that employees will neither advance or inhibit religion. Based on these three things alone, it is obvious that wearing a burka is a clear violation of the K80 ISD handbook. While it is regrettable that my God has been taken out of the schools, it still remains a fact that I have to respect. But if my guide has to go, then nobody else's guide is going to be in my schools either. In addition, as a taxpaying member of this community, I have the right to send my child to school to study and learn in an environment that he feels safe in.
My son is well aware of what wearing the burka stands for and the affront that their belief system poses to our safety. He should not have to be fearful of someone in a leadership or teaching role in his school. We watch the evening news in our home. On a regular basis, there are terrorists represented on the news killing Christians, dressed in exactly the same garb that the woman sitting at the front of his classroom was dressed in.
They should not be allowed to wear clothing that incites fear and poses a perceived threat to our children.

enforce the policies as they are already stated and declare that no clothing that asserts or represents a religious statement of any kind be allowed in our schools. Thank you for your time.

Welcome, Ms. Stevens. It's good to have you here this evening. MS.
Good evening. Board members, Mr. Haley, thank you very much for having me this evening and thank you for your service. My name is Ursula Stevens and I do not live in the district, but I have grandchildren in the district. I am a volunteer at Stevens Elementary. I enjoy listening to students read. I am acutely aware that some students are very bright while others struggle to read. The students who have read to me, such as Wade Garcia and Mustafa Bayati, provide a spark to my experiences at Stevens while I enjoy guiding others as they struggle to read. I am also very aware of how much effort the teachers at Stevens put into their jobs. Besides performing their regular duties, teachers also serve as PTA officers due to the lack of volunteers at Stevens and probably because those parents cannot serve in positions because of their work schedules or whatever.
I also see teachers taking advantage of
every minute of their conference period to plan, to run materials, to conference with others so that they can meet the needs of all students. It is a pleasure to see this in action.
Regarding volunteers, Stevens does not enjoy the
multitude of volunteers that other schools have nor does the school enjoy all of the bells and whistles and the extras that some schools do however the volunteers that do volunteer are very hard-working and they provide great help we have two dads at Stevens who have been presidents have they have both been president of the PTA and have served in other positions those two men are there all the time they are outstanding volunteers as well as a few other volunteers that we have and I'm also very proud of the mentors who come to help our students they're there on a regular basis my purpose here today is simply to publicly thank miss Vaughn sorry miss Vaughn the administrators all of the hard-working teachers and volunteers at Stevens thank you

Thank you, President Mikulski, Superintendent Fraley and Board of Trustees for your time tonight. My name is Kurt Nyturkan and I do live in Katy ISD and I have three sons that attend Katy ISD schools, two at Seven Lakes High School and one at Seven Lakes Junior High. Tonight I would like to talk about lacrosse in Katy. I represent Seven Lakes Lacrosse. however in general I think I feel like I also represent all of lacrosse in Katy so just to just introduce that they're going to be probably six of us speaking tonight five or six of us tonight including some of our senior players our captains you'll find that when they do come up and speak they're very passionate about lacrosse it's a game that they've played for a long time and they just we just want to talk about some of the some of the opportunities for lacrosse in Katy, especially as it pertains to Katy ISD. So you have to forgive us. Obviously, we've got a good turnout tonight. We really only had about 24 hours to kind of organize this. We started late last night, early this morning, kind of talking about attending this meeting. So you can see by the turnout, we had a pretty good result anyway. By way of introduction, and I'm very proud of the young men and young ladies that have come out tonight, given that short lead time, taking an evening of their time at this time of year. it's very special. So I do want to talk about lacrosse and KD first. There are about 280-300 KD ISD student players that presently play lacrosse. That's across four programs, so Seven Lakes, Taylor, the Cavaliers Youth Program and the Lady Cavaliers Youth Program. And even at Seven Lakes, we're not, we don't just have students from Seven Lakes, but we also have students from Tompkins and and Cinco Ranch on our team. So these are boys and girls teams from youth to high school.
And so I just want to talk about lacrosse in general in Katy. It's growing hugely. In Houston itself, high school and youth lacrosse, at the boys and girls level, there's about 3,500 players. And that's grown about 25% growth in the last three years. Nationally, lacrosse is the fastest growing NCAA sport. There are college club teams locally at University of Houston, Rice, A &M, UT and SMU.
As far as
the youth levels in the US, over the past five years, boys lacrosse has grown by 50% and girls lacrosse by about 43% enrollment. So it's not it's not only growing locally it's also growing nationally and just to talk about the the skill level of Texas lacrosse obviously lacrosse in general is very much a Northeast sport traditionally upstate New York traditionally Long Island traditionally Maryland but there are teams that have participated from Houston select teams that have multiple KD ISD students on them that have gone to Syracuse that have gone to Maryland and I know one team competed at Syracuse last year and went 5 and 0 another team has gone 4 and won at tournaments in these high levels of play. So there are players that will come up and talk to you that have played for four years, six years longer than that. Some of them have won state awards. Others are going to continue on to play NCAA lacrosse or club level lacrosse in college. So as they come up, I just appreciate your time and thank you for listening to us. And ultimately we want to be able to advance the sport within in Katy as it pertains to Katy ISD thank you for your time

my name is gina bertain i do reside within kdisd and i have three children i have a senior at seven Lakes, a freshman at Seven Lakes, and a seventh grader at Wood Creek Junior High.
I have been an active member, an active volunteer at all of their schools through the years and we have seen the growth in Katie firsthand especially at Kilpatrick Elementary and Wood Creek Junior High as I noticed the trailers being added to every single day it seems out there. What I've also noticed is an an increase in an amazing growth in the interest of the sport of lacrosse. Our two sons first started playing in the fourth and seventh grades with the Katy Cavaliers. They were looking for a fun alternative to baseball, something to shake it up and do something a little bit different than everybody else. Back in the day, we were lucky to see 20 boys out on the empty field in front of Cinco Ranch High School. Those 20 boys made up the elementary and the junior high teams. Now the youth program has multiple teams at each grade level. They are little Cavaliers as far as the eye can see. My running joke when recruiting new players is that this is every little boy's dream sport. We not only give you a stick, we tell you to run with it and chase that other kid. My little boys are now varsity players. They're proud to represent Seven Lakes High School and they're proud to represent Katy ISD. Our family loves the sport and we are so pleased to see it catch on as it has over the years. We have the kids to play. Now we just need somewhere to play. Lacrosse fever is spreading from the north and has made its way down to Houston. Our Seven Lakes Division I team not only competes with but wins against other schools with established programs, both private and public. It is more than just a club sport. Mr. Knight-Turkin gave you the statistics. I hope to give you a mother's insight. Lacrosse and Katie is here to stay, I'm happy to say. Although we appreciate the use of the field in front of Cinco Ranch High School for practice purposes, it's not a long-term solution for our lack of field space or our lack of a home field. We ask for your support in allowing us access to Katy ISD fields. When Seven Lakes Lacrosse makes it back to the Division I playoffs, like we did this year, when we're back there next year, we'd like to provide our kids true home field advantage. Thank you.

Good evening. Thank you for your time, and thank you, Mr. President and school board. I do live in Katy ISD. I do not have any children. Just throwing that out there. My name is Jonathan Roth, and I'm a graduating senior at Seven Lakes High School. I am going to be attending Texas A&M University in the fall. There we go. And I'm going to be hopefully playing for the Division I team at Texas A&M University. Our team this year has gone, we have gone leaps and bounds so far. We went from 2-9 last year with two division wins. And this year we are 12-6 with wins over Houston Christian, Kincaid, all kinds of private schools. and we have all kinds of team accolades. We are we have had two or no three division or all district players me my friend Kai Neiturken and then Ryan Berry was selected for All-State and he was our first All-State player at Seven Lakes High School.
Lacrosse is growing in the city of Katy. We have all the amount
of people that have come in and just supported us is unbelievable. We have the athletes we have the parent volunteers we have the coaches all we need is the facilities to compete with these high division one programs like these private schools the problem is we move around for practice all the time we had three practice facilities over the course of this year and while we are very thankful for the use of the single ranch turf fields which were amazing and the fields outside of Cinco Ranch right in front they aren't like miss pertain said they they are not a long-term solution. We have the fields over at Katy Park, and while those are lighted and we can practice there, those caused a lot of injuries to some of our players because the grounds were uneven and we lost a couple of real solid players due to shin splints and other kind of stuff coming from these facilities. I am leaving, I'm done. What I don't want is my little brother who is an incoming freshman next year and the rest of my teammates who have worked so hard to have to go through the same thing that we did. I want them to have this. I played football at Seven Lakes for three and a half years, and we had the best facilities in the state of Texas. And I'm proud to say that we, as a club, sorry, we, I believe that the Seven Lakes lacrosse team, we wear the name on our chest. We represent the school around Houston, around the state. People know us now. and I believe that we I believe that the facilities that can be provided from the district would go tremendously far in helping us achieve our goal of a state playoff win thank you

hello my name is Kanae Turkin and I do as I'm Katie I see I do not have any children and I am currently a senior at Seven Lakes High School where I play for the Seven Lakes lacrosse team which I had the privilege of being one of the captains this year and I just finished my final season so that's pretty emotional and I'm really sad to be moving on but I'm looking forward for the future because I'm going to be able to play NCAA lacrosse at Southwestern University at the Division III level.
I've played lacrosse for 11 years. Ever since I was seven,
I started playing in Canada, where it's a lot more popular. And I've been on some very successful teams. I've been on teams that have gone on to win city playoffs. I've been on a provincial winning team, which was huge. However, I can say that this year was the one that stands out the most in terms of leadership, organization, and brotherhood.
We've competed against teams
who have all the odds in their favor but since August we've worked almost every day in order to beat those odds and we we have been a winning team this year we won we've done all of this while practicing on fields that are flooded worn out and essentially mounds of dirt that honestly are kind of dangerous to play on and we've had some injuries that reflect that we play against private private schools who have state-of-the-art facilities such as Episcopal High School, Kincaid and Strait Jesuit, and even some public schools such as Sy Fair and Friendswood whose school does let them use their facilities.
Teams who have been less successful than us,
even with all the access to these amazing facilities, and we have had so far no one really believe in us except for ourselves.
This year was our most successful year ever. Last year
we had a 2-9 record. This year we were 12-4, getting our first playoff berth ever. And we had, before this year, we had one player who was an honorable mention ever in the history of our club. This year we also had one honorable mention, but we also had three all-district and one all-state player. So that's incredible. We truly are a family at Seven Lakes. I got to play with my best friends every day and it's something that I'm going to miss tremendously in the coming years but I also want my little brother who's in seventh grade this year and my other little brother who's a sophomore I want them to be able to reach the same amount of success but possibly with more support from the school district thank you

I don't know. It's probably me. Thank you, Board Members, President Mikulski and Superintendent Fraley. I'm incredibly proud of all these kids for showing up today but that's beside the point.
I'm sorry I'm probably gonna be the worst speaker up here by the way so just forewarning you no pressure. I grew up here in Houston we did not have lacrosse when I was growing up. I played soccer which at that point was an outcast sport this was many years ago but of course you see what soccer's done it's grown into a fantastic sport here in Houston but didn't have lacrosse. So my kids played football and they played soccer and baseball.
And after a season of travel baseball, my youngest son, who was fourth grade at the time, decided that was not for him. It was a lot of travel, a lot of sun-soaked days. So we told him, you've got to play something. Sports are important to us. We think it builds a lot of character. Team play builds a lot of character. And so you know he he went to looking for a different sport and soccer was not really his sport So he came to us and said he wanted to play lacrosse
What's that Didn't know what lacrosse was kind of heard about it heard some things about it. So I said Let's look it up. And so basically we found he found a team here in Katy the Katy Cavaliers and And he said he wanted to go play us. We saw some videos online and and and and I'll tell you, you know it was looked pretty interesting, but Nevertheless, we thought we'd go out to a practice, and we were all hooked from the beginning. My seventh grade son at the time also came out and tried it, and he was hooked. He got all of his friends hooked. It was just from the get-go. It was a great combination from a parent's perspective. It's athletic. It's physical. They do get to hit each other, but it's also a finesse sport. It combines a lot of the things from basketball and football and the hand-eye coordination of baseball. You've got to have it all. You've got to be an athlete to play this sport. So we fell in love with it and have been sticking with it ever since. I know Coach Shooter is out here somewhere. He was with us from the get-go in the beginning. Like my wife said, there weren't that many kids, but we found it not too hard to recruit them because it was such a fun sport to play. But as the boys have pointed out, we have always suffered from a place to play. And this year our home field was actually in Memorial, thanks to a member of our team and one of the parents. And it was a great facility, but we drove a long way and played at Memorial for our home games. Our first playoff game we've ever played in. We ended up home team. We won home field advantage and we were playing at Kincaid's Field. so their home field so that was a little bit of a downer but they made the playoffs and we had a good time and where the boys have made us really proud this year especially the seniors they really struggled I mean you know we've been here gosh with the young ones don't realize how hard it was for the older ones I'll tell you that they they work their butts off let me see I think that's pretty much it for me thank you
final speaker this evening will be Matt Minnick
good evening board members my name is Matt Minnick I have four children in the the Katy ISD school district. I also live in Katy. I've got my son here who's a freshman, plays lacrosse, goes to Tompkins High School but plays lacrosse at Seven Lakes. I have two of my younger boys back there that play for the Katy Cavaliers and my daughter back there who chases unicorns and writes poetry. I've got the job to kind of sum things up for you here tonight being the last speaker. I want to try to paint a picture for you at this time if I could if Whenever seven lakes lacrosse team heads out to play an away game Whether it be that King would wear a clear lake or memorial or the woodlands. I Get envy. I'm from the Northeast hotbed of lacrosse and I know what the sport is about and those locations those communities have figured it out and they've got great facility for those boys I look at our kids faces when we go to those places and my heart breaks for them especially this great senior class that you got to hear from tonight because I know what's going through their minds and we don't have that those boys do our boys are just as good and and we're not there also on the side of it, the competitive side of me, I think, wow, when the Woodlands and Kingwood and these folks have to come to Katy to play Seven Lakes, they're wondering, are we even coming to Katy? Where are the nomads going to be this time when we show up to play them? And that doesn't feel very good. I've only been here for three years, but what I've come to learn about Katy is whether it's football or shooting marbles in the tournament, Katie shows up and I think there's a reputation there. And when I go to the Woodlands, I don't see, I see Woodlands High School when we play them. That's the reflection and I think our boys deserve the same.
So as I said, I did move here three years ago. The sport is
exploding in the Northeast. You got to think about there are so many families that are moving here like I did from the Northeast. Lacrosse matters and people are putting in time and trying to figure out where are the hotbeds. We had a family here that just recently moved. I think the father was a coach for the Houston Texans. His boy is a lacrosse player and he wanted to know where was lacrosse. Where is the hotbed? So we kind of let him come to some of our games he fell in love with our community and they are now with us. So
to sum up here you know what's our ask tonight? I don't know if that was clear but we would like to get on a future agenda so that we could discuss the possibilities of using Katy ISD facilities either new or existing to better represent our great community and the great boys that play the the sport representing KDISD, Seven Lakes Lacrosse. Mr. President, first of all thank you all for coming tonight. I think you did an outstanding job presenting your case and without a doubt we really appreciate the passion. I would propose that right now when you guys go out and perform, you're almost like ambassadors for KDIC. You're representing us very, very well, so we really appreciate that. We were here years ago with a group of robotics, I think it was, and they too were looking for a home and a place to be successful at and I shouldn't say this publicly but I'll do it anyway. I've been involved with UIL for a long time. We've been hearing about lacrosse for a number of years. I'm on the legislative council.
Everything I've heard tonight is
exactly true a lot of movement into this community from quality families who are very accustomed to playing lacrosse I don't know anything about lacrosse I watched a girls game on TV one about two months ago scared me to death I think the girls more not violent but more physically active than the boys because they were doing some heavy swinging but it's an amazing sport I've really I've seen you guys out in front of Cinco Ranch and other places as well and I've just been thinking about what can we do and so you've come tonight and you've got me thinking. You got me thinking so thank you for being here tonight. Appreciate you very much.

Would you like to start this off or would you like us to say some nice words first?
It says on my agenda that the new board president is the presenter here, so I'd love to hear what you have to say first.
Thank you very much. You had a really tough year. You got us organized. You got us pointed in the right direction. most importantly I think you helped get in the community running to help realize what we needed for our kids and pass into the 2014 bond you had a lot of hard work you got some big shoes to fill I hope that in 365 days I'm able to get close to at least getting partial full thank you
you president yes sir like to recognize mr. Mahowski and the job he's done he this past year we had two new board members that came on board and they have provided us a new assets to our board worked well with them and as I said earlier that uh i feel like that he has provided us with a foundation that we can work off of and move forward with and uh i know he's he's a busy person in his job and uh it takes takes a lot of time to do the job that he's he's done this past year and uh i used to be commended for that but uh brian i've seen you grow a lot this year and uh i think that you there's a there was a few times when things clicked with you now you're going oh yeah i get it now and so i i and uh it's not to say that's a bad thing but i think we all go through that from time to time that we see that yeah this is how it works and this is what we do and and to understand uh you know what's going on and and to be our liaison to the superintendent is so important and you've done a great job this year.

I'd like to say thank you as being one of the aforementioned new assets that you supported me on my journey to have the opportunity and the honor to sit here at the dais. And I really appreciate not only your support, your mentorship, your friendship, you're talking me off the ledge more maybe this once and and just being there you know it was a new role for me the new role for you I'm very proud of this board what we stand for as a body of seven and I appreciate and I am humbled by your service your servants heart and now you get to have a little time off and you've working just as hard for the district in a different role so thank you very much for all the time and sacrifice and heart that you've poured
into the school district president yes sir well Brian I think you've had a great year our biggest challenge this year obviously was the bond I remember so many phone calls during that time and so many discussions I just appreciate your leadership in this through that some of the other challenges obviously with new board members trying to get them up to speed all those challenges so uh well deserve rest my friend what is it mr. president yes ma'am mr.
Mahalsky really just pretty unheard of for someone in their first term in in office to sit in that chair with the responsibilities that come with President. And having had that, I know the amount of time it takes and the leadership and the vision to get the board together and going forward. And honestly, I just would like to talk about your first three years from when you first came until now. I haven't seen a board member learn as much in as quick a time ever than I've seen you. You are a student of the job. You took trainings. You asked questions. You were open-minded and always, always, always focused on student opportunities, student success because that's our job. with that comes great support for teachers and community and our incredible administrative staff but it was always focused on students and when you look at them and want for them greatness increased greatness all the rest of it comes together and with your focus there and I must say from a position of humility and great leadership and focused on the right things i have been very privileged to serve with you and congratulations on a job well done as president and on a great first term same to you mr griffin congratulations on being re-elected they both are highly deserving of continuing to serve our community and i was proud to vote for you and that's my greatest privilege is to give my vote to someone that I believe will lead us into the future and both of you gentlemen will do that very very
well thank you okay mr. president yes sir me I almost called you madam president cuz I missed out on that whole thing the first couple of months where everybody called me madam but your hair is long That's all I'm used to. But no. Thank you all for the kind words and for the opportunity. I mean, a year ago when we were in this, you know,
you guys put your trust in me to lead this year, and that was much appreciated. You know, I consider myself extremely privileged to work with six other individuals that have a tremendous amount of passion and love for the children in this district yes we are all we are all about student success and we know well we know it takes a whole lot more to get there and just loving kids. And we are blessed to live in a community that values education of its children. We're blessed to have the administrative team that we have here, the campus administrations, the teachers, I mean, all of the positions. It is a blessing. And many of us moved here because of that. and so we want to make sure that we leave it in great hands for the next generation so I'm very happy that Charles and I were both reelected to our second term I am also very pleased to pass the torch of this seat to to my good friend and Charles Griffin and I know that you will do an amazing job as well leading us in this next phase and there's still a tremendous amount of work to be done and thank goodness we passed that 2014 bond because in many cases they're already here and there are more coming and we know that and and you know that was a minimum requirement I think to to have success in this current school year so I'm so happy that the community came together and I'm excited about a lot of people in the community that came together during that process and then came back during the last board election as well and came back to help support a resolution that this board passed to reduce high-stakes testing I think we've got a tremendous opportunity here in this community in this district to bring people together for the common good of educating our children. And in my next term, my plan is to continue to work on that and continue to build bridges across people so that we can connect each other for a greater good that's much greater than ourselves. So, again, Ms. Fox, thank you for your mentorship. You served as board president my first two years on the board and trained me well. Thank you very much. But all of you, thank you for the opportunity to lead the past year and I look forward to moving down a few chairs and maybe having a louder voice in the next year. So congratulations Mr. Griffin.
