Thank you, Ms. Fowler. This is Eddie Fowler again from Hazel Elementary where Ms. Heather McKay, he is the principal. She's sitting on the front row smiling proudly there. Parents are Ken and Amy Fowler on the front row smiling as well. And brothers Nicholas and Brian Fowler. Now, who's who? Oh, Nick and Brian. Good to see you guys. Eddie likes reading and math. And what teachers say about Eddie is Mrs. Hernandez says, Eddie is focused and determined and class to make good grades she is a friend to all and what miss Bayless says is and he's a very hard-working the word of causes motivated and friendly miscongeniality and he probably better have you tonight huh

Unknown speaker not human verified

I'm a fourth grade miss Bayless's class and I go to gym at hazel midtree a few things I like about Hayes is that all the staff and all the teachers always say hi or other nice things even though they might be having a bad day. I also love that every teacher makes learning so fun so I always want to learn more. But the thing I'm really obsessed about is that all is about the activities. The booster time is awesome and I really enjoyed Jump Boat for Heart. Another thing that I've always loved every year from kindergarten to fourth grade is field day. It is so athletic. Another thing I love is that we always have great field trips. And the last thing that is really enjoyable is specials. We have music, P.E., art, and library. In music, we always sing fun songs. In P.E., we have terrific games. In art, we have really cool projects. And in library, we have awesome books and creative workstations. Thank you for listening to me share a few of the reasons I'm crazy about hazel mint tree.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you. Thank you. I'm going to get some pictures if that's okay. Okay. Addie, we're so proud of you for being here tonight. This probably should be a certificate of bravery for speaking in front of all these people, but I don't think you need that. I see a future of public speaking maybe in your future with your confidence. Thank you for sharing why you're crazy about Hayes Elementary. when my family moved here many years ago our children started at Hayes Elementary so it's like home to me and I'm crazy about it too this is a bag for you a lunch bike and it's so very special because only the people who come only the children who come here and do the pledges get one of these that's only about nine or ten a year it's very special and just as you are thank you for being here with us

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you. Thank you. Thanks.

I'd like to recognize any scouts that we have in the audience tonight. If there are any scouts here, would you please stand up and tell us your name, your troop number, and what badge you may be working on. Do we have any scouts in attendance this evening? Okay. I guess we will move on to our recognitions portion of our agenda.

Good evening, Mr. President, Board Members, and Superintendent Fraley. This past February, Bob Bryant, KDIC Executive Director for Fine Arts, was selected as the recipient of the 2015 School Bell Award for Lifetime Achievement in Music Education. This award recognizes educators who have committed more than 25 years to building the state of music education throughout their local community and who have had an impact across the state in the nation mr. Bryant was selected for his work in the Houston community and beyond he was recommended for this award by his colleagues and representatives of the state and national organizations who are aware of his work in music education please join me in congratulating mr. Bob Bryant on this outstanding achievement

Unknown speaker not human verified

President? While they're taking this picture, I can attest I've chomped with Mr. Bryant. Yes, I've chomped with Mr. Bryant several times. The State National Conference is, and he is extremely well-respected, well-known, and we're very fortunate to have someone of his caliber here. He's one of the hardest working guys. He's a James Brown who's good at speaking KDIC right? That's a working man. But we really appreciate Bob all that you do for our boys and girls and and the passion you bring and expertise you bring and the programs you've helped build. So we appreciate you sir. You're well deserved.

KDIC was recently named among the best communities for music education in the nation for the seventh consecutive year by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation. The district received this recognition for demonstrating an unwavering commitment to providing comprehensive music education for all students. Just a few of the music programs offered in the district are string orchestra, full orchestra, choir vocal ensemble, marching band, concert band, and jazz band. At this time, I would like to call Mr. Bob Bryant back up to the front to accept this award on behalf of KDIC.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. President, may I say something else? Yes sir. Well along with the work of Mr. Bryan and his whole team, you have to celebrate the work of the Board of Trustees for their support. Across this nation, when budgets get tight, one of the first things boards tend to cut are the fine arts. In this community we have continued to invest in the fine arts and that's a legacy that goes beyond my time here and I think will go long beyond my time here because this community cares about music education as a whole child and the words to be commended for continued investment. Thank you all so much.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you. Good evening president Mahalski Superintendent fraley and members of the board I'm excited to be here tonight to present a unique partnership opportunity between wind born elementary and the spark park organization Kathleen own be the executive director for the spark Park organization has joined me this evening as well as mark T who's director of ancillary services and special projects in the maintenance and operations in Katy I see whether we have provided you with a spark Park calendar so that you can see some of the previous parks that have been created in partnership with other school districts spark is a 501 base in the greater houston area to date this organization has helped to turn underutilized school playgrounds into neighborhood parks at more than 200 locations windborne elementary is a proposed site location for a spark park in 2015 The SPARK Park program develops neighborhood parks on public school grounds. Each park is designed based on ideas and needs of the school and the surrounding neighborhood. While all parks are different, a typical park consists of modular playground equipment, a walking trail, benches, picnic tables, trees, an outdoor classroom, and a public art component. component. Spark Parks are available for public use during non-school hours and on weekends. As you can see, these are some pictures of Spark Parks and this is from this past year's calendar, so it shows you some of the projects that have been done in the past year. You can see that each one of them have the art component on it and that's where the schools design what works for their school community. By aligning with the Spark Park organization, we have the opportunity to make major renovations to our school playground and neighborhood. Green spaces are gathering places where neighbors form social ties that produce a stronger community. Additions of new fitness areas for kids and adults will encourage healthy lifestyles and outdoor activities outdoor learning spaces can promote learning opportunities for our students at Windbourne Elementary or to be used by Girl Scouts Boy Scout troops working on their outdoor badges we realize that this is a new partnership with Katy ISD which is why those of us at Windbourne Elementary are committed to making this not only a great thing from art for our school but for the Katy community in the audience tonight you can see that we have community members they're excited about this possible venture we hope to be the trailblazer by being the first of these partnerships for the KD community but it is our hope that we start a trend that will enable other schools to build our community even stronger by creating spark parks at our schools from a project management perspective these are the anticipated steps a landscape architect is retained to develop the park plan and the project scope our spark committee is made up of members our school community homeowners Association business represents any community members that would like to be part of the planning the maintenance and operation group will assist in the design bidding and construction phases a district building my fiction process we used following the district standards and specifications analyzing the district vendors the maintenance operation group will provide rain routine maintenance and the upkeep windborne elementary would like your support on becoming the first spark park in Katy ISD we believe that this joint venture will be a great addition to our community for more information or to see videos and other examples you can visit www.sparkpark.org thank you for your time and at this time we would be happy to answer any questions that you may have about this partnership mr. Adams

Unknown speaker not human verified

thank you for the presentation one slide back you had an architectural landscaper I believe there and it says has retained who would be paying for this be paying

Unknown speaker not human verified

for the architect hi I'm Kathleen own being I'm the director of the spark program and we the spark program will find an architect if the I think I mentioned to you if there is a spouse or someone in the neighborhood who would like to do that as an in-kind service we would certainly love that and if the school district has an architect firm that might be building schools for y'all We've worked with a number of PBK a number of the architects that have been building schools across The city and if one of those people would like to do it as an in-kind service If not, then we will find a person that has helped us in other schools And have them do that and we will pay for that. It's usually under $5,000. All right. Thank you

Unknown speaker not human verified

Any other questions? Mr. President? Mr. Griffin? How much does this upgrade to the playground cost the district?

Unknown speaker not human verified

We ask that every school district put in $5,000, a commitment of $5,000. And we also will be relying on your team to monitor construction, to put the project out for bids, and then to maintain the park because it's your property.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you. Any other questions?

Unknown speaker not human verified

I think the superintendent probably is familiar with spark parks that we've done in Spring Branch ISD. We've done probably 15 or so.

Unknown speaker not human verified

President, yes, without a doubt. This has been an outstanding partnership across the city of Houston. Started many, many years ago and I'm very familiar with the work that's taking place. I'm very proud to have Windborn selected to be a part of this and I look forward to the work ahead.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This coming year we are selecting I think it's eight to ten schools. Our first one in Katy, our first one in Crosby ISD, we have one in A-Leaf, we have one in Spring Branch, and we have several in HISD that we'll be working on at the same time.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Our first speaker tonight is Lisa Selden.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Lisa Selden.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Hello, KISD Board and Superintendent Fraley. Thank you for the time. My name is Lisa Selden. I am just a mom. I do have two children. I have two children that have graduated and two more coming through. and I've had the pleasure of watching Katie Independent School District grow over the last 28 years and I just want to say I'm very proud to be a part of it and I didn't know this but I'm just before the meeting started this is Valeria and she is in the Bekendorf choir I'm the Bekendorf choir president and we are here not to complain but just to ask you to please keep our choir our assistant choir director Mrs. Lowe on staff at our school. We need her because Beckendorf is a flagship choir among KISD choirs. I have a bunch of information that talks about that and talks about why we need Mrs. Lowe. That's the first reason I'm here. The second reason I'm here is I was so glad to see that seven years of music excellence in our community community in music education. That is wonderful. But the second reason I'm here is that there is a need to keep choirs stronger in KISD. We've lost some numbers and therefore we're losing teachers according to the HR ratios. And it's not just about the numbers, guys. It's definitely about our teachers. And Valeria is here to attest to that. She, I didn't know she was coming, but her sweet mom brought her. She's a sixth grader. She moved here in January from Venezuela. And She was talking with the counselor about, I don't know, I'd really like to take choir, but I don't speak very good English, and I don't really know. So she asked me to speak for her, but she wanted to let you know that Mrs. Lowe came down to her and talked to her and assured her, we got you, girl. We can do choir, no problem. And she has made amazing friends. Her mother just definitely wanted her to be here to just say, please keep Mrs. Lowe, and please help us to keep our choirs very strong in Katy. Thank you so much.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you. Our next speaker this evening is Janet Manning Shaw.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Hi. Good evening. My name is Janet Manning Shaw. I have a seventh grade son at Beckendorf, and I'm also here to speak about the Becken-Dorf Choir. So thank you very much for the opportunity. It feels particularly opportune just having witnessed that I'm part of a school district that values education and has a superintendent that is committed to fine arts and not cutting budgets when things get tough. So, I'm not going to presume to teach you all to suck eggs. You're education experts, I'm merely mother of a seventh grade child. I'm sure you're all fully aware of the research studies that have shown how much music education benefits students in their whole education and their learning ability and I think we can all agree on the value of a dedicated and an extremely exceptional teacher that we have at Beckendorf, Mrs Lowe. What I would like to do is to read a letter that my seventh grade son wrote and many of the varsity boys choir signed. I think it's a wonderful testament to the the school and the district, this letter. It, to me, it embodied KISD's mission of unparalleled learning and unparalleled learning experience to inspire students to create the future. I think this letter symbolizes that. It's like your mission in action. These are a group of students who value their teacher and want to learn. so let me just read it out for you it's written by a seventh grader so I hope you appreciate that we need mrs. love at Becken Dolf we think mrs. low should be a choir teacher at Becken Dolf next year she is absolutely not a teacher who should leave to if you have to make cuts our choir would not be nearly as successful if she is not here to teach us she has so much knowledge and experience we are lucky to have her as our teacher. Plus Mrs Lowe is so fun and enthusiastic she makes us want to learn and sing. Mrs Menzies, that's the choir director, is a fantastic teacher but there's no way she can teach all of us. We have very high standards and we want to maintain that standard and get better. We want Beckerdorf to go to TMEA next year to show we are one of the best school choirs in Texas. If Mrs Lowe goes, we will fall behind other schools. Look at our UIL record and comments from the judges. Come to our classes and hear us sing. You will be impressed. Look at the pictures of us impressing audiences at the Rockets and Dynamos games. Ask people who came to our fall, winter and and pop show concerts what they thought of our performances. If you need to know more to help you make decisions, please ask us. We just want you to know how much we need to keep Mrs Lowe. Our school is all about trying to be the best we can be. We can only do that if we keep the best teachers. So we need Mrs Lowe and Mrs Benzie at Becandorf. your sincerely Beckendorf choir students I was impressed that he took the time to write the letter I was impressed that he's part of a school district and a school that encouraged him and his friends to make him think that he could make a difference and that he had to learn to respect and value an excellent teacher thank you very much

Unknown speaker not human verified

this policy trusted you just heard from two folks who are very much involved in a very positive productive way in our district and without a doubt what they say about Becken Dorf acquiring the fine arts which I performed with Oxford before on stage with the violin that I don't know how to play outstanding programs but it out and I was made aware of this challenge this morning and what What I've learned, and I don't have all the details yet, so I'll keep looking into it, is for the past two years, we've yet to meet the threshold of enrollment at the school. The challenge is they have so many quality programs, kids are just picking lots of different things, and we've lost some in the choir to other programs. We don't try to take the unit from the school. It's just that we don't necessarily allocate it from here for that purpose, but we'll look into it a little bit more and see what it is. I came out with no promises, but we'll look into it. I just thought about this this morning look into it Thank you all

Our third speaker this evening is Judy Martin

Unknown speaker not human verified

Good evening Gordon Mr. Fraley, my name is Judy Martin. I live in the district. I have a Granddaughter still in the Katie Independent School District I just wanted to say that this year was my first year to experience firsthand The FFA program and it is absolutely Phenomenal my granddaughter learned so much and had so much fun and made so many good friends That I just I think it's a phenomenal program My only concern is that these kids bless their hearts They got up for four months had to be at the school at 515 to catch the bus to go feed their animal had to go back in the evening to feed their animal had to go on Saturday and Sunday twice a day to feed their animals they were out there when it was cold putting up tarps because the barns aren't enclosed so they were doing all they could to keep their animals warm my big concern is that these kids have worked so hard they were there sweating out if their animals were going to get sold if they were going to be an auction or what it was and the animals sold and the school district raised I think six hundred and fifty thousand dollars or so my big problem is the livestock show was in February it is now the end of April these students still do not have their money any normal business would have have had these kids paid in 30 days I am on top of that the school district is getting if I understand correctly and I may be wrong 8% of anything over barn sale so my thing is that the district is making interest on the six hundred plus thousand dollars plus they're getting 8% of what the kids sold their animals for and the kids have done all this hard work and I really think we need to work on getting these kids their money and I have heard it could be May or June I think that is totally unacceptable because these kids earn this much they earned and they worked hard for this money let's give it to them so they can appreciate it and know that they did a good job thank you I think miss Martin I

Unknown speaker not human verified

was out there this year with the Rotary Club and I looked over saw you working pretty hard prior to the sale and that's where a lot of the hard work really goes in. I don't know all the details. I know that at the auction a lot of folks make pledges of certain purchases. Have we gotten that money in yet or not? I don't know. A lot of times it's us still trying to collect the money from everyone that's bought the animals. It's part of what I understand now. That may not be the way it is, that's what I understand, but we're looking at that some. Thank you, ma'am. And thanks for

Unknown speaker not human verified

working so hard that day. Our next speaker tonight is Terry Majors.

One of the things that ATPE understands is the necessity of freedom of speech and agrees with the Supreme Court statement this freedom is the matrix the indispensable condition of nearly every other form of freedom without it other fundamental rights like the right to vote would cease ATPE has compelling documentation from KTISD teachers that tell us that bullying of teachers is occurring in our schools and this is not the first time that I've spoken to the board about this meaning of filed grievances after attempting to work with administrators informally but the percentage of grievances resolved in their favor is minuscule the district lists safety as the first priority for our schools. Yet safety must involve feelings of well-being and security. If teachers feel insecure, so do their students. As Les Parsons writes in his book, Bullied Teacher, Bullied Student, in a bullying school, morale is eroded, initiatives squelched, and risk-taking discouraged. When an administrator threatens or humiliates a teacher in front of students, it affects much more than just the teacher. The entire learning environment and general atmosphere of that school is ruined. On some KDISD campuses, teachers work under constant duress, fear, untenable requirements, unethical treatment, and demeaning conditions. Test scores aren't and should not be viewed as the end-all and be-all, but how are scores on abusive campuses? Is a D plus acceptable? In a recent ATPE survey, teacher comments included, the principal berates teachers in the presence of others. one team's lunch period is scheduled from 210 to 240 at that time the cafeteria is closed planning time is taken up with mandated meetings teachers have been forced to stand up throughout a 45-minute planning meeting to teach them a lesson about cooperation a parent was told by the principal that if she wants her child buckled into a seatbelt during dismissal, she must pull over to the side because there is no time to wait for every child. The principal makes it very difficult for teachers to transfer to other schools because she refuses to give leavers accurate references. A statement such as, yes, she worked here, is not a reasonable reference. we are made to feel we do not know how to do our jobs and are spoken down to and criticized for our every move children and parents barely know the principal her presence around school is minimal the principal has been very careful about not leaving tracks of her wrongdoing she makes it clear that she does not want anything in writing one minute there is never a clear path to follow regarding what is expected I no longer trust myself as a teacher and I cannot work with the students in a way that is most beneficial to them I am not allowed to meet my students where they are and work with them appropriately it's the hope of Katie ATP officers that public attention will prompt proactive changes in the schools where bullying of teachers is still rampant this is not a new problem but it is a problem worthy of scrutiny no one should have to work under a bullying system it is demeaning and demoralizing and it certainly does not bode well for our young people who are the innocent victims thank you very much

Unknown speaker not human verified

it's president with Mrs. Mages concerns and advocacy on behalf of teachers and I really appreciate that. And for years we had a great relationship with ATPE and just some internal issues the officers we were working with all quit en masse. We have not had a relationship with the new officers and I'd like to try to fix that if that's at all possible. One of the schools in question was already being addressed. Actually had a B-plus rating at school and that matter has been taken care of. So we have internal procedures that when when used, work. When they're interfered with, then it doesn't work. So I'm very pleased with the HR. We have the Employee Relations Division that works with staff who has any concerns. We have Assistant Intendants who work with staff as well. So it's a matter of allowing the process to work before you call it a failure. And I have many, much evidence of when procedures have been followed, proper action has been taken.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I have one actual question from that was majors to think you you stated that ATPS 700 and 1760 feature members is that correct or that is that all Katie ISD or okay thank you our final speaker tonight is Lisa Babbitt

Unknown speaker not human verified

I put Dr. Lisa Babin. I'm quite sure I've earned it. Mr. Moholsky. I would ask Ms. Fox that you refrain from screaming at me the last time I was here. You were screaming epithets at me from the pulpit, and I would ask that you just wait to do that in private if you don't mind. I'm here tonight to give a compliment, actually. I really appreciate the fact that Katy ISD has promoted a gentleman up from security guard to full police officer with Katy ISD everyone knows officer Middleton We claim him as our own at maid Creek High School, although he is very well known in the district I honestly don't know what has taken you all so long to recognize his talent skills and abilities and what he brings to the table So good job on chief good job and promoting him I think you really need to take a look at um continuing to look at your security guards and investing more training in them and seeing what we have available to move up the second thing I would like to discuss is we need a traffic study at maid Creek complex it's time to revisit that we are having some issues there I've spoken with the principals we need this comprehensive study done from Greenhouse to Ashley from Ashley to do Laney from do Laney to Psalms and from Psalms back to Greenhouse we have teachers and principals who are out there with stop signs stopping the traffic when police officers are not available we actually need two police officers there during dismissal the Greenhouse Road is exceptionally busy and it's only going to get busier as there's more businesses that are being built around there um we also need you to name a road we all know it as bus barn way it's the road that goes between Maid Creek junior high and goes all the way through to the bus barn which goes out the side to do Laney we have all called it ever since that's been built as bus barn way but if there was ever an accident back there it'd be very difficult to describe that too because everybody calls it different things we have another road that road needs a stop sign at the end of it because it really is technically a four-way stop and there's a lot of accidents that are near misses there a lot of children that walk there children are going to walk in the streets I've spoken to y'all before about putting a sidewalk back there it's not when a child gets hit I mean if a child gets hit it's when it's going to happen we also need the road that goes around the complex it goes from bus barn way where the track is all the way around to the back and pass behind maid creek junior high and maid creek elementary we call that maid creek circle or maid creek loop we'd love for y'all to name it so that when we send people to our track it's on maid creek loop off of bus barn way and then you have no name on the street coming off dulaney that comes past the child care center and we all know that as maid creek way it goes from dulaney all the way through into the school all the way out the parking lot to Ashley. So if you guys could put some signs there maybe so people can you know talk about when the kids get hit they're on this one this one or this one. I don't know if you're legally can do that but it'd be nice if you looked into it. It'd be nice if we had two more stop signs there. One of the improvements that have been made is is that the gates to Bus Barnway are closed after four buses, five buses go up and park for May Creek Junior High. That has been an extreme help in stopping the confusing traffic. There's a lot of kids on bicycles and rollerblades and you name it the kids are there and they're not always paying attention. So that has really really improved the situation but what would help too is if Dr. Paz had the ability to be able to shut down his campus in case of an emergency. There are no gates at the end of Bus Barn Way where it leads right there to Greenhouse and there are portables right here and it it would be very easy for somebody to come in and take a child. So in an effort to kind of improve the security of that area, we would love to see another gate put there. Maybe something that our technology department could work with and maybe he could press a little button and the gates could close and secure the campus down. I don't know, that might be too high tech. But that's pretty much it. I mean, we need a comprehensive study done redone we need some more officers there one compliment is is that we do have an officer that sits on Delaney by the high school and he gets out of his car he puts on his lights it has helped tremendously he's very proactive he puts on his raincoat in the rain he's got a little umbrella when it's sunny so that's really helped the situation as well so that's my concern I would like to see that it fixed we'd also like to see some paint up there and then we'd also like to see a timeline of what our construction is we know we're getting a new roof but if you want to really get us excited give us a piece of paper that tells us when we're getting what done put it on an easel in our lobby so that we can see what's happening at maid creek thank you okay that concludes our open forum this

I move that the Board of Trustees approves the proclamation for Celebrate Our Teachers Day.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Motion by Mrs. Fox, seconded by Mr. Adams, that the Board of Trustees approves the proclamation for Celebrate Our Teachers Day, which I will now read. Proclamation of the Katy Independent School District Board of Trustees, Celebrate Our Teachers Day. Whereas teachers are the heart of Katy ISD, making our district great. and whereas teachers work to open students minds to ideas knowledge and dreams and whereas teachers fill many roles as listeners explorers role models motivators and mentors and whereas teachers continue to influence us long after our school days are only memories therefore the KTISD Board of Trustees in observance of the National Teacher Day 2015 does hereby proclaim Tuesday May May 5th as Celebrate Our Teachers Day in Katy Independent School District. Signed this 27th day of April 2015, Brian Mahalsky, President, Katy SD Board of Trustees. Any discussion?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. President.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mrs. Fox.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It's just kind of a little story to kind of go directly with how they influence our memories long after the students are gone. I was at a wedding of a friend of our child's about two weeks ago. and in the small wedding was the high school math teacher and the junior high math teacher of this young man. One of them he hadn't seen in eight years and one of them he hadn't seen in 11 years. And that young, those two math teachers were in attendance at his wedding. When we say they make an impact outside of a classroom, that's it. We love our teacher.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Okay, any other discussion? I have to make one comment here. I love the first sentence of this resolution, whereas teachers are the heart of KDISD. And I think that is the thing I'm most thankful for, to live in a community that values education the way it does. And we had our Teacher of the Year reception last week, and you can walk in that room and you can just feel the love that the staff has for for the students and the children in this district that that says it all I think that is you know it says whereas teachers are the heart of KDSD making our district great and that is one key ingredient right

Unknown speaker not human verified

there that I appreciate in our staff so and the 1500 applicants that were at our teacher fair on Saturday show how much they want to come and be a part of these Right.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Okay. Hearing no other discussion, we will proceed to vote. All those in favor, please raise your right hand and say aye. Motion passes 7-0. Our next proclamation is School Nurse Day on May 6, 2015. May is a busy month. KDSD is blessed with 71 school nurses who work to support education and advance student Health school nurse day recognizes the contribution school nurses make every day to improve the safety health and academic success of all students

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. 13 emotion its president is going. I'm sorry. I'm moved that the board trustees approves the proclamation for school nurse day

Unknown speaker not human verified

Okay, the motion by mrs. Dorrell seconded by mr. DeBrell that the Board of Trustees approves the proclamation for school nurse day Proclamation of the Katy Independent School District Board of Trustees School Nurse Day 2015. Whereas children are the future and by investing in them today we are ensuring our world for tomorrow. And whereas students have the right to have their health needs safely met while in a school setting. setting, and whereas KDISD school nurses have served a critical role in improving public health and ensuring students' academic success for more than 100 years, and whereas school nurses are professional nurses that advance the well-being, academic success, and lifelong achievements of all students by serving on the front lines and providing a critical safety net for our nation's most fragile children, and whereas school nurses understand the link between health and learning and are in a position to make a positive difference for children every day therefore the KDN ISD Board of Trustees and observance of the National School Nurse Day does hereby proclaim Wednesday May 6 2015 as school nurse day in the KD Independent School District signed this 27th day of April 2015 Brian Mahalsky president KDISD Board of

trustees any discussion I'll make it brief mr. president when we moved here six and a half years ago it was actually the school nurse at Griffin my fourth grader at the time was really struggling with moving and and knew everything being so new and it was the school nurse that called me in and and she recognized it she said I you know he's having a hard time and she then went to the principal on his behalf and shared that he was having some anxiety and and she was a game changer for him she really was and she made it easy for him to go to school every day she made agreements because he made a connection with her and he knew she cared and so when he walked in every morning she would walk him to class and if he got anxious or upset he then was given privileges to go see the school nurse and chat with her and she ended up becoming a lifelong friend of my family's as well it just so I don't think they get the recognition sometimes that they deserve so I like that we're doing this for them okay any

other discussion hearing none we've proceeded to vote all those in favor please raise your right hand and say aye motion passes seven to zero our final certainly not our least proclamation of the evening is Police Officer Appreciation Day on May 15th 2015 the KDISD Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency comprised of 50 officers Police Officer Appreciation Day highlights the invaluable service our police officers provide the district and shows appreciation for those that serve and protect the KDISD community

Mr. DeBrell?

I've always respected our police force greatly. I would say over the past year I've been following them on Facebook and the amount of training that these men and women go through On a consistent basis is astonishing. I had no idea of the amount of training they go through They are so prepared for anything that this community may face I'm just so proud of them Thank you gentlemen and ladies for all of your hard work chief It's amazing, and if you need anyone to drive that chase car I'm out there. You can chase me all you want and be fun. So I'll find a volunteer So but they do a tremendous job. I'm just so impressed with the level of training that they go through

Unknown speaker not human verified

Very well said mr. Brill I echo those sentiments

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. President this box. Well each one of these proclamations we could just go on and on about each group of people and how much we appreciate them for what they do and Many times throughout the school year we hear discussions and we answer questions about a perceived incongruity with our administrative staff ratio to students we talk about teacher-student ratio and then we talk about administrative support staff ratio to students and I'm just I look at these or we have tonight school nutrition nurses police I can think of paraprofessionals and so many other categories of people without whom our teachers would have to do it all they'd have to to go pick up our children, they'd have to feed them breakfast and lunch, they'd have to take care of any concerns we have, security concerns, and they'd have to administer medications. They wouldn't be able to teach. It takes the entire group to really make us as successful as we are and we're indebted to these support people far beyond any proclamation can say, but to give us great support for our classrooms and allow our teachers to be able to teach and they're doing an excellent job at that and I just wanted to appreciate that any other discussion

Unknown speaker not human verified

very well so this okay we know we'll proceed to vote all those in favor please raise your right hand and say aye motion passes 7 to 0 trustees I'll point your attention to the information items portion of our agenda where we We have the quarterly investment report and donated items to Katy independent school district Our future meetings we will have a board work-study meeting on Monday, May 11 2015 and our regular board meeting on Monday, May 18

Unknown speaker not human verified

2015 spreads if I could before you sir. Yes, I was Disturbed by the news I heard about regarding the FFA program. So I followed with dr. Cassie. I said wait, what's going on? But it just sounds bad What I've learned is we typically have a May 1st payout date, but we wait until we get at least 99% of the money from the donors and we've not reached that threshold yet. When the money comes in from the donors, it goes out to the students. We don't just sit on it and hoard it. And I don't know if we can write checks from the district budget to students. We can discuss that later, because if we start writing checks before we get the money in, and then the money doesn't come in, is that a legal issue? It probably is. Our donors, they're not letting us down. We appreciate all they do and we're very thankful for their work But we do not just sit on the money willy-nilly we wait till it comes in then we distribute it

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you for that clarification There being no further business we are adjourned at 8 20 p.m.

About the underlying data (7 notes)
  • The transcript on this page was produced automatically by speech recognition. No person has checked it against the recording. It is a way to find a passage, not a quotation.
  • No speaker on this recording is identified. The transcript separates one voice from another but does not name them, and every turn therefore reads Unknown speaker.
  • The speaker turn timeline is not continuous. There are intervals with no attributed turn, so a gap between two turns is not evidence that nothing was said.
  • The district’s video index for this meeting carries no timestamps, so the recording is presented here as a single section rather than divided into agenda items.
  • The district publishes this recording as 21 separate files rather than one. The player on this page plays the first file; the later parts are on the district’s own player, linked above. Transcript times run continuously across the whole recording, so a time past the end of the first file will not play here.
  • The recording is played here from the district’s own stream. The archive does not hold or serve a copy of the video.
  • No speaker on this page is named. The automated attribution available for this recording was derived from names spoken aloud in the transcript, and a surname inside a turn is not evidence of who is speaking. Every speaker is therefore left unresolved.
