Unknown speaker not human verified

And welcome to heaven.

Unknown speaker not human verified

That's what I call KDISD.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I love it here.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And now you are, I mean, hearing all about you makes you sound incredible, as I like to call you, K-O-B-D, kind of a big deal.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So we're very proud of you.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And all of us are available for delicious dinners, Ms. Cantu.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thanks for being here.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Congratulations.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you.

Unknown speaker not human verified

consent agenda gentlemen we'll move to item one fire equipment I'm a Stevenson how are you

Unknown speaker not human verified

Good evening, President Fox, Superintendent Fraley, and members of the board.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I have one contract to bring before you this evening, and while it's not one of our larger contracts,

Unknown speaker not human verified

it's a little bit complex in that it has a number of vendors involved.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This contract is for the fire equipment inspection, repairs, parts, and supplies.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It involves a number of different systems because we have different manufactured systems

Unknown speaker not human verified

that were placed in the buildings as they were constructed.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So we've had to involve a number of vendors to get these items serviced.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So after consideration of all the proposals that were received, the recommendation

Unknown speaker not human verified

for the primary vendor to service the fire alarm and inspections and for testing

Unknown speaker not human verified

and repair services will be classic protection services.

Unknown speaker not human verified

However, we will have to award other vendors for those items that are still under warranty

Unknown speaker not human verified

or the parts or captive components where they can only be serviced by the manufacturer.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So there will be additional awards under that category of fire safe protection services,

Unknown speaker not human verified

advantage interest, Wilson fire equipment and supplies, firetron, allied fire protection,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and firetrol protection services.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The next section we are talking about fire sprinkler backflow preventer and pump and fire pump inspections and testing and the recommendation is to award that to AB fire protection.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Then we're talking about the next section is inspection and service of kitchen and paint booth suppression systems and the recommendation is to award to fire TRON.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The recommendation for the purchase of fire extinguishers is to award fire troll protection services.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And the last section for service is to award fire safe protection services for the purchase of fire extinguishers.

Unknown speaker not human verified

All of these vendors that are recommended are recommended on the basis of best value,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and they will bring both quality service and products to the district.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Then we have a recommendation for multiple awards for all the items that may not be specifically listed that we might run into when we are having these items serviced.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And that will be to award to all the vendors that were submitting proposals.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It's a one-year contract with an option for four additional one-year renewals, and the annual expenditure is anticipated to be $60,000.

Unknown speaker not human verified

dollars anybody want to talk about fire fire extinguishers anything thank you mrs stevenson

Unknown speaker not human verified

our next two presentations are by mr mcelwain easements good evening how are you good evening

Unknown speaker not human verified

president fox uh board members uh mr fraley uh this is a standard item that i bring before you

Unknown speaker not human verified

folks each time we build a new school it's actually a great milestone in a project because

Unknown speaker not human verified

it indicates that we're getting close to wanting permanent power in the building

Unknown speaker not human verified

to be able to start air conditioning those facilities it's hard to believe

Unknown speaker not human verified

when we start saying well these two new schools are scheduled to open next

Unknown speaker not human verified

August which probably is just right around the corner what we're talking

Unknown speaker not human verified

about this evening are the two new elementary schools the one and if I may

Unknown speaker not human verified

address both of these together because it's similar similar board items the

Unknown speaker not human verified

school in Pine Mill Ranch which is on Pine Mill where it's Drive and winding

Unknown speaker not human verified

Point Lane and the elementary school in Cross Creek Ranch which is on Flewellin

Unknown speaker not human verified

Oaks Lane we're requesting tonight an easement for Centerpoint to provide

Unknown speaker not human verified

electrical service to both of these campuses and we're bringing this to you

Unknown speaker not human verified

now because we are anxious to get the power to the campus so that we can start

Unknown speaker not human verified

bringing in the mechanical equipment to start up the air conditioning come the

Unknown speaker not human verified

the new year any questions thanks so much

Unknown speaker not human verified

okay mr. McElwain you're next with the design associated with the new science

Unknown speaker not human verified

technology engineering well I'm pleased to present this next item to you this

Unknown speaker not human verified

evening I'm joined this evening going from your right to the left Michael Todd

Unknown speaker not human verified

in the blue shirt here with SHW as is Jennifer Hendrickson and Laura Sockleben.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Michael doesn't have a speaking part tonight but he's largely responsible for

Unknown speaker not human verified

the graphics that you see this evening the renderings on this particular

Unknown speaker not human verified

project. As you know we and Dr. Sarah Martin the Director of Career and

Unknown speaker not human verified

Technology as you know the board retained SHW at the July meeting for the

Unknown speaker not human verified

the design of the STEM Project Center which is one of the three student

Unknown speaker not human verified

activity facilities which is included within the upcoming bond referendum. Once

Unknown speaker not human verified

the approval was received to retain SHW we immediately commenced design on

Unknown speaker not human verified

these projects to meet the aggressive schedule on this project. This project is

Unknown speaker not human verified

scheduled to be complete pending the the results of the bond referendum. It's

Unknown speaker not human verified

scheduled to be complete in December of 14. Before I turn it over to the SHW team

Unknown speaker not human verified

I just wanted to indicate that since July we've had several meetings of the

Unknown speaker not human verified

Design Committee. The Design Committee was and this particular project was

Unknown speaker not human verified

comprised of approximately 28 individuals several which were community

Unknown speaker not human verified

individuals. We met several evenings out at the Bistro at the Miller Career and

Unknown speaker not human verified

Technology Center and SHW worked tremendously well with the with the with

Unknown speaker not human verified

the we love the Bistro and no one invited us next time next time next time

Unknown speaker not human verified

it was it was after hours unfortunately the Bistro was but it was a great venue

Unknown speaker not human verified

to hold these design meetings. So without further ado I'll turn it over to I think

Unknown speaker not human verified

Jennifer to present this project.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank You Peter, President Fox, board members and Superintendent Fraley. We're

Unknown speaker not human verified

very honored to be architect for this very unique project. We're gonna go real

Unknown speaker not human verified

quickly not to spend a lot of time tonight but just to give you an update

Unknown speaker not human verified

on where we are design wise. Let me make sure. I want to start off with thanking

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thanking the Board of Trustees and administration.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. McIlwain mentioned the community members, several of them, a few of them are in the

Unknown speaker not human verified

audience here tonight.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Some more will be here when we come next meeting.

Unknown speaker not human verified

A lot of the KDISD members as well as SHW group.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Once we finish the design meetings with the committee, we also have had several meetings

Unknown speaker not human verified

with several departments to further our design to make sure we can refine it and bring the

Unknown speaker not human verified

information to you today.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We went with energy management, the police department, maintenance operations, community

Unknown speaker not human verified

services as well as technology.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So we made sure that we covered their needs inside this facility.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I'm going to spend just a few seconds on the design process.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Peter alluded to the many meetings that we had.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It was a very collaborative process.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This slide shows you, we showed some case studies to the community and the four headings

Unknown speaker not human verified

in bold, quality light, connection to the outdoors, functionality, flexibility and openness,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and the aesthetic of the space were issues that we all discussed as a group and the committee

Unknown speaker not human verified

guided us in our direction as how the design evolved as we're presenting it today.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So it truly was born from the committee members telling us which way to head down the street.

Unknown speaker not human verified

These are some pictures from the vision sessions that we had.

Unknown speaker not human verified

You can see we were really busy writing and exploring the first two meetings.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So these are some pictures of that activity.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We presented this very early on when we came to the three overriding vision goals for the

Unknown speaker not human verified

project.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Fundamentally is to create a dynamic place to have very exciting activities, a place

Unknown speaker not human verified

for creativity, communication, collaboration, and most importantly flexibility, and to provide

Unknown speaker not human verified

a space for exploration and hands-on discovery.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So this is a really a unique learning environment that all the schools will be able to participate

Unknown speaker not human verified

participate in and it's science, technology, engineering and math will be the focus and

Unknown speaker not human verified

it'll just be a very awesome space for the students to learn and grow in.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The program, real quick, is the building is just under 24,000 square feet.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The biggest space in the building is the high bay space.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It's about 5,000 square feet and it's the main activity bay.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Laura's going to go through with how they relate to one another, but the other key spaces

Unknown speaker not human verified

to look at are the project bays.

Unknown speaker not human verified

There's eight project bays in the facility today.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And then some ancillary building support, data, electrical, mechanical spaces.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And at the very front we have a foyer for controlled entry and some office space.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I forgot to mention there's some shared spaces which include a shared shop as well as some

Unknown speaker not human verified

rooms you'll see that we've labeled flex project rooms.

Unknown speaker not human verified

They can serve as community training, staff development, as well as an auxiliary project

Unknown speaker not human verified

room.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So the colors that you see on the slide here will translate into the plans that Laura is going to go through next.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you, Jennifer.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Next I'm going to take you guys through a tour of the building.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So we'll start with the site plan and then move into the floor plan.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is just showing where we are located.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We're adjacent to the Miller Career and Technology Center.

Unknown speaker not human verified

There's a lot of synergies between what goes on in that building and what will go on to this building,

Unknown speaker not human verified

so it made sense for those to be next to each other.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Site plan, you can see on the left, Katy Land Drive, and then the drive that comes into

Unknown speaker not human verified

the complex where Miller and Rains and Road Stadium are.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We're situated kind of facing towards Miller and towards Rains.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We figure most of the traffic will be coming from those two facilities, so you have pedestrian

Unknown speaker not human verified

access from those.

Unknown speaker not human verified

You'll look north is up on this plan and you'll see that there's a bus drive up

Unknown speaker not human verified

there. That's something that we have as an alternate that we hope that we can

Unknown speaker not human verified

get in this project so buses could come in and drop in at the front but then

Unknown speaker not human verified

you'll see there's some additional parking that was added on the east side

Unknown speaker not human verified

of the building about 18 spots and that also is a location where buses would be

Unknown speaker not human verified

able to come in and as well as fire trucks and things of that nature. You'll

Unknown speaker not human verified

You'll notice at the back there's two little notches that come out of the bottom corners

Unknown speaker not human verified

of the building.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Those are your service yards and the access, the concrete that is access to those for maintenance.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And then of course to bring in some larger items because this is a project space, there's

Unknown speaker not human verified

going to be a lot of larger items coming in and out of this building.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Here's the floor plan and I'll kind of start at the top right.

Unknown speaker not human verified

You see that kind of light blue area, that's the reception and there's an office that's

Unknown speaker not human verified

right off of that so you have a secured vestibule when you first walk into the

Unknown speaker not human verified

facility and from that point you go into the gray area which is the Commons and

Unknown speaker not human verified

the high bay space and I'll show you in a minute how this is actually we call it

Unknown speaker not human verified

the high bay because the elevation in there is higher than everywhere else

Unknown speaker not human verified

because that's where there's going to be a lot of activity that is going to need

Unknown speaker not human verified

that that high ceiling space you've got your two flex projects areas in the blue

Unknown speaker not human verified

up at the top. Like Jennifer said, those are multi-use. They can be used as classrooms,

Unknown speaker not human verified

for training, distance learning, all sorts of things. There's a folding partition in

Unknown speaker not human verified

between there, so it can be opened up into one larger space or two smaller. And they're

Unknown speaker not human verified

both about classroom size, and they have their own storage associated with that. Then of

Unknown speaker not human verified

course on either side of that high bay space, you see the project bays. And there's two

Unknown speaker not human verified

two components to that. There's the kind of project build space and then the purple is kind of storage

Unknown speaker not human verified

slash smaller tools. So for instance, the robotics teams, they would be using that back space for

Unknown speaker not human verified

their drill presses, their bandsaws, what you would call the dirty stuff that goes on and then

Unknown speaker not human verified

the program in the electronics happens in that green space. You'll see that we intentionally

Unknown speaker not human verified

place those right next to the high bay space. One of the things that we heard

Unknown speaker not human verified

from the committee is visibility is very important. They wanted everybody to be

Unknown speaker not human verified

able to see what everybody else is doing in here because it has the opportunity

Unknown speaker not human verified

or presents the opportunity for learning between the groups that are all in here.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The shared shop is that kind of orangey yellow at the bottom and you'll see

Unknown speaker not human verified

there's some big doors overhead doors that go into there and then also down at

Unknown speaker not human verified

the bottom of the plan. So if you were bringing something in and out of here if

Unknown speaker not human verified

one day they do solar cars or something of that nature you can get those things

Unknown speaker not human verified

in and out of this building again we really try to design for maximum

Unknown speaker not human verified

flexibility so that whatever comes in and out of this building it will be

Unknown speaker not human verified

functional in this building and then everything you see in the kind of red is

Unknown speaker not human verified

your support spaces so your restrooms your electrical mechanical data and all

Unknown speaker not human verified

of those this is just a quick slide to show you that we wanted to also think

Unknown speaker not human verified

about the future so as we design this we thought okay what happens is the district grows and you

Unknown speaker not human verified

need more groups in this so this is how this might look in the future if it ever needed expansion you

Unknown speaker not human verified

could add four more project bays and of course an another high bay space in the center and then

Unknown speaker not human verified

you've got those support spaces as well because you'll need more restrooms more mechanical things

Unknown speaker not human verified

things of that nature. As we were laying this out we wanted to make sure that

Unknown speaker not human verified

these project bays were actually functional for the needs of the students

Unknown speaker not human verified

that are going to be coming in here so we did a site visit to the Cinco Ranch

Unknown speaker not human verified

robotics team and actually saw what they have how they use it and we laid it out

Unknown speaker not human verified

in this space to make sure that what we're building is actually going to work

Unknown speaker not human verified

for the needs of some of these groups. And then we put this in here because we

Unknown speaker not human verified

think it kind of shows give some clarity on the transparency of this building you'll see there's

Unknown speaker not human verified

glass in between the high bay and each of those project bays and then again between the project

Unknown speaker not human verified

bays and their the purple space which is that kind of storage slash tool area and then you'll

Unknown speaker not human verified

also notice that there's some large overhead doors in between each of those that is designed again

Unknown speaker not human verified

for more flexibility so if you wanted to combine open up two of those bays or three of those bays

Unknown speaker not human verified

and create larger spaces for different functions that's possible within this building.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is a section through the building, so when we say high bay, that's that high space in the center.

Unknown speaker not human verified

If you've ever seen the robotics videos, which I'm sure most of you guys have,

Unknown speaker not human verified

they're throwing frisbees and basketballs, and they need high space.

Unknown speaker not human verified

They don't need ceiling tile like you have in here,

Unknown speaker not human verified

because if things are being thrown you don't want that in anything that's going

Unknown speaker not human verified

to get damaged so it's a very clean functional space I mean this is just

Unknown speaker not human verified

looking in the long direction you'll see the only space that has a ceiling if you

Unknown speaker not human verified

look far to the right that's that flex project bay slash classroom it has a

Unknown speaker not human verified

ceiling for of course acoustics and the things that might happen in that space

Unknown speaker not human verified

These are just some quick views that go around the building. So this is from that entrance that

Unknown speaker not human verified

kind of faces the road that comes in and Miller. And then we'll work our way around. And you can

Unknown speaker not human verified

see there's glass. There's glass at the front that's all north facing. So we're letting in

Unknown speaker not human verified

good light, less heat gain, not direct light. Something we also know is that robots don't mix

Unknown speaker not human verified

well with direct light the electronics get messed up so we wanted to have a lot

Unknown speaker not human verified

of day lighting but we didn't want to mess up what's actually happening in the

Unknown speaker not human verified

building and this is working our way around towards the view from Katie land

Unknown speaker not human verified

which you'll see here and you can see those I call them we call them light

Unknown speaker not human verified

monitors but they look kind of like little sawtooth coming up off the top

Unknown speaker not human verified

there those are in there's one in each project Bay again they're north-facing

Unknown speaker not human verified

so we're getting some north-facing natural light into those spaces just to

Unknown speaker not human verified

create a better working environment for the students and this is looking at the

Unknown speaker not human verified

back where the shared shop is here's an aerial shot of the site I'm just showing

Unknown speaker not human verified

how it relates to the Miller Center to that road that comes in and this is that

Unknown speaker not human verified

the front entry night shot so one of the things you'll notice is that glass in

Unknown speaker not human verified

the front you know we showed the night shot because again the transparency was

Unknown speaker not human verified

very important to the group they wanted within the building to see what was

Unknown speaker not human verified

going on inside but then also as you're passing by from outside we wanted to

Unknown speaker not human verified

spark some interest this is there's different things going on in this

Unknown speaker not human verified

building and so we wanted it to look different we wanted it to pique the

Unknown speaker not human verified

interest of the community of other students and draw them in this is from

Unknown speaker not human verified

from the corner of Katie Land and the drive coming into the site.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And you'll notice I didn't mention earlier where you see that brick right there.

Unknown speaker not human verified

That is kind of a bench height wall, and it's actually a courtyard to the outside.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Another thing that was important was capturing as much space as possible.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So at the back of the shared shop and also here, there's a courtyard type

Unknown speaker not human verified

space where the kids can come outside and use that space as well.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Here's a view of the high bay space.

Unknown speaker not human verified

You'll notice that you have the glass going into each one of those project bays.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Right now we've put numbers on them, but it could become something else on the glass.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So each one starts to have an identity.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So whatever's happening in there, that could start to show up on the glass as it faces out into the high bay.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Then you'll notice on the north side up there, that white space, that's a marker wall.

Unknown speaker not human verified

so that as kids are out there doing things, they can be writing notes.

Unknown speaker not human verified

working out things together and again learning in front of everybody with

Unknown speaker not human verified

everybody pulling everybody in this is a view south looking at the shared shop

Unknown speaker not human verified

again just showing the openness the other thing I should mention is you'll

Unknown speaker not human verified

notice that there's benches in between each project bay yeah you can see it in

Unknown speaker not human verified

the lower left and the high bay and the reason is visibility was very important

Unknown speaker not human verified

but we also know we have robots running around and competing in here and robots and glass may not mix.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So this was a way to get some seating built in so that you could see a lot of collaboration happen in the space,

Unknown speaker not human verified

but then also it's functional. It protects the glass and prevents, hopefully, maintenance issues.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is just a view we showed with the practice field that robotics uses.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So you could kind of get a feel for what might happen in here. Yes, ma'am.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Absolutely.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Is that the garage door type thing there at the back of this rendering?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Yes.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So that's the back of the building and they could bring colors and things.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So there's a garage door there and then if you were to walk through that garage door,

Unknown speaker not human verified

there's another one on the other side of that shop.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So you can go all the way through there.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Directly outside.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Directly outside.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I interrupted before you were finished and you might have already gotten to that.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I see we have other questions.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Do you want us to wait until the end?

Unknown speaker not human verified

You can ask now.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Okay, Dr. Proctor, go right ahead.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This fits with that question.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Is there any need, because you have doors between the four bays on each side,

Unknown speaker not human verified

is there any need to have a door on either side from any one of the bays?

Unknown speaker not human verified

like say you know Bay 7 and Bay 3 to bring bigger things in and out of that

Unknown speaker not human verified

main area well and I forgot to mention and thank you for bringing that up each

Unknown speaker not human verified

door you can see the doorways that go into each one of those those are

Unknown speaker not human verified

actually eight foot wide so it's two four foot leaves that open up okay and

Unknown speaker not human verified

that's that's big you feel that's big enough to get big things in and out

Unknown speaker not human verified

absolutely okay if I could add to that we toured the Toyota STEM Center and

Unknown speaker not human verified

that's the type doors they had to get cars in and out and we thought that was

Unknown speaker not human verified

a good idea and and asked them to replicate it great yeah and you know we

Unknown speaker not human verified

wanted we didn't want to do the overhead doors from the highway in there because

Unknown speaker not human verified

of the amount of movement you're going to have the students going in and out of

Unknown speaker not human verified

there it's not very practical to have those big doors so this gives you that

Unknown speaker not human verified

flexibility and functionality of going in and out but it can open up to the

Unknown speaker not human verified

eight foot wide so you can get if you go into solar cars all that you can get in

Unknown speaker not human verified

there if you try to take a hummer through there it might be a problem but

Unknown speaker not human verified

I don't think that's what's going to be happening in this facility so thank you

Unknown speaker not human verified

very much if I can just add to we toured as as mr. Gnell mentioned the the Toyota

Unknown speaker not human verified

Center at this at the start of the presentation I alluded to the community

Unknown speaker not human verified

committee members many of those folks are related to a number of these firms

Unknown speaker not human verified

We had a representative from Toyota that was on the on the committee as well as representatives from General Electric

Unknown speaker not human verified

BP Exxon Mobil

Unknown speaker not human verified

Floor so a lot of the community members were directly related to this particular

Unknown speaker not human verified

project and those you know the questions you asked are exact questions that came up in our committee meetings that

Unknown speaker not human verified

Started us to start making those larger openings and make sure we had

Unknown speaker not human verified

maximum functionality

Unknown speaker not human verified

I think there would be great interest and lots of questions.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It's okay if we keep going?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. DeBrell, you're next.

Unknown speaker not human verified

In your dirty area where the band saws and that heavier material,

Unknown speaker not human verified

what type of ventilation are you looking at?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Right now there's going to be ventilation,

Unknown speaker not human verified

but not as much as in the shared shop.

Unknown speaker not human verified

There's going to be a lot more of what you would see,

Unknown speaker not human verified

the exhaust systems for the shop equipment.

Unknown speaker not human verified

With the band saws and all of that, they don't have the same requirements.

Unknown speaker not human verified

They're not welding, they're not doing wood cutting or any of that stuff there.

Unknown speaker not human verified

But we are working with our mechanical engineer to make sure that we meet whatever safety

Unknown speaker not human verified

requirements we need to in those spaces.

Unknown speaker not human verified

One more question.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The height of this ceiling and this high bay?

Unknown speaker not human verified

It's 20 foot clear to the bottom of the structure.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So right now I think it's 24 feet to the top of the steel.

Unknown speaker not human verified

But what was important, especially for the robotics people, was that we have 20 foot

Unknown speaker not human verified

clear to anything hanging into that space.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I just wanted to reiterate, Laura had mentioned that, that one of the committee

Unknown speaker not human verified

members was Mike Outlaw, who is the leader of the Cinco Robotics team, and he had perfect

Unknown speaker not human verified

attendance at all of our meetings.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Not only the meetings at the Bistro, but there were also some outside meetings that we had

Unknown speaker not human verified

with him so we were I guess joined at the hip so to speak with respect to his

Unknown speaker not human verified

specific requirements and his expertise that he could bring to the development

Unknown speaker not human verified

of the space not only in two-dimensional but also in three-dimensional functional

Unknown speaker not human verified

requirements. One final question. In meeting those requirements you could do

Unknown speaker not human verified

anything within his requirements so that kind of set the stage for the baseline.

Unknown speaker not human verified

line. Mr. Griffin was next. Peter since these groups tend to be rather large do

Unknown speaker not human verified

you plan the overflow parking to go behind the existing Miller Center and

Unknown speaker not human verified

are we going to have enough lights so that the kids since they're working

Unknown speaker not human verified

after hours can get safe to and fro? Yes we'll be looking at all of those areas

Unknown speaker not human verified

as we move through this is the design stage you know should the board approve

Unknown speaker not human verified

this particular project and subject to the results of the bond

Unknown speaker not human verified

referendum we then move into the construction document phase where we'll

Unknown speaker not human verified

be looking at more detail at those type of specifics.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. Huckabee. Um to the uh project bay I was looking I didn't see

Unknown speaker not human verified

anything what are the actual dimensions of the

Unknown speaker not human verified

project room versus the store room?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Because I could see some approximate things based upon some other deals but I

Unknown speaker not human verified

couldn't. Yeah so the project room is 35 feet in

Unknown speaker not human verified

the long direction and it's about 25 feet in the short direction and then

Unknown speaker not human verified

your base storage slash tool room is about 21 feet by 25 yeah so the project

Unknown speaker not human verified

base base is about 860 square feet and then the base storage is about 500 square

Unknown speaker not human verified

feet and you'll notice that there's each one of those base storage has a small

Unknown speaker not human verified

mechanical closet pulled out of it another thing that we're looking at as

Unknown speaker not human verified

we design this building because you're not going to always have every bay full

Unknown speaker not human verified

and there's a lot of activity that's going to happen after hours at odd hours

Unknown speaker not human verified

in this building we wanted to make sure that our mechanical systems are designed

Unknown speaker not human verified

to be flexible as well so that we're not running this whole building at the same

Unknown speaker not human verified

time we want to save as much energy as we can so that's why those you see those

Unknown speaker not human verified

in each project base so that each one of those can be controlled individually

Unknown speaker not human verified

good excellent great go next slide and like I mentioned before this is just

Unknown speaker not human verified

kind of a sample set up in that high bay space where they could be set up the

Unknown speaker not human verified

competition fields and run the robots yeah and you'll notice you'll see person

Unknown speaker not human verified

sitting on the benches viewing what's going on so you've got that built-in

Unknown speaker not human verified

viewing and collaboration. This is a view in that project bay and the point of

Unknown speaker not human verified

this is really just to show that you can see out into the high bay you see that

Unknown speaker not human verified

large opening in between the two so that that could be opened up again you know

Unknown speaker not human verified

maximum flexibility and then of course you see the light natural light coming

Unknown speaker not human verified

in from the ceiling above and again you see exposed structure same thing in the

Unknown speaker not human verified

high bay you know very industrial tech you know technical finishes do we have

Unknown speaker not human verified

certain do we have the ability to host one of the contests with this facility

Unknown speaker not human verified

right now this facility it does not have seating you've got a capacity in that

Unknown speaker not human verified

high bay of about 330 people so I think it's mostly a practice facility when you

Unknown speaker not human verified

you bring in competitions you're gonna bring you bring in fixed seating you

Unknown speaker not human verified

build a lot more restrooms and things of that nature that would make this thing

Unknown speaker not human verified

start to get a lot bigger in size I'm going to do that the Merrill Center yeah

Unknown speaker not human verified

that that's why I was gonna get a Merrill Center yeah you have facilities

Unknown speaker not human verified

that would host that very well you could host demonstrations here very easily or

Unknown speaker not human verified

you could have you could have special events in this room that are unrelated

Unknown speaker not human verified

to the robotics it could be some you could host something that for the staff

Unknown speaker not human verified

and all meet there and have a work group or just a celebration or something it's

Unknown speaker not human verified

just wide open for possibilities and we did you know we talked to some of the

Unknown speaker not human verified

robotics teams and and one thing that they said is a lot of times they'll be

Unknown speaker not human verified

hosted by other places that have teams not to do a competition but to do a big

Unknown speaker not human verified

practice where they all kind of come out because they're all competing on the

Unknown speaker not human verified

the same field with the same parameters so that could cut that kind of

Unknown speaker not human verified

collaboration could happen here as well

Unknown speaker not human verified

okay project schedule and budget as Peter covered earlier we started in July

Unknown speaker not human verified

we've been working through schematic design and design development with the

Unknown speaker not human verified

committee and then with personnel from the district and of course we're

Unknown speaker not human verified

presenting to you tonight with the hopes that the next board meeting the project

Unknown speaker not human verified

will be approved to move forward pending the results of the bond election we would then go

Unknown speaker not human verified

into construction documents and have those completed and ready for bidding in february

Unknown speaker not human verified

and then of course the facility would go through construction and be open in december of 14.

Unknown speaker not human verified

and then we're at about 24 000 square feet just under like jennifer said the total project cost

Unknown speaker not human verified

at this point is 4.5 million dollars are there any additional questions I love

Unknown speaker not human verified

the design I love the ideas that race through my mind and I know many people's

Unknown speaker not human verified

minds when you see this building which doesn't exist in Katy ISD so should the

Unknown speaker not human verified

voters award this building to us I see great potential to that my question is I

Unknown speaker not human verified

love the windows right that's the connection and being connected to other

Unknown speaker not human verified

people and the creativity that happens when you see something and it sparks

Unknown speaker not human verified

right that's so so great the large opening at the back and then you have

Unknown speaker not human verified

the future expansion I'm just wondering like did you all to talk about all of

Unknown speaker not human verified

those things like like when you have the future expansion now you've got great

Unknown speaker not human verified

whatever is great big has to drive through longer ways and things so did

Unknown speaker not human verified

Did you talk about that? I wondered about the placement of that orange thing at the back if we add to it.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We did, and what you'll see, I brought back up the floor plan, and you'll see that shared shop, again, it's got the openings on both sides.

Unknown speaker not human verified

When you do the future expansion, we would have a large opening into that high bay.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We'd have the same large openings that go into those project bays.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Right now, you see the red, which is the support spaces.

Unknown speaker not human verified

between those two if the if that future expansion happened and there needed to

Unknown speaker not human verified

be direct access in between there that's where that would happen where you see

Unknown speaker not human verified

the carve outs for the service yards potentially the service yard would get

Unknown speaker not human verified

bigger there might be a way to come in from the side there so we did talk about

Unknown speaker not human verified

what we didn't want to do was lock ourselves in and so that's part of that

Unknown speaker not human verified

discussion exactly what I was thinking that as the future expansion that to

Unknown speaker not human verified

come in from this end let's call that South right is that so yeah you're still

Unknown speaker not human verified

that is up you're correct good job let's just pretend like that South if you had

Unknown speaker not human verified

to if you had something in the middle of that big future expansion to get all the

Unknown speaker not human verified

way to this in your you're just creating so I wondered if you had something from

Unknown speaker not human verified

the side so let's create a side entrance and call it the Fox idea for interest

Unknown speaker not human verified

There you go. You'll put a sign over here.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The fox entrance. Okay, Ken. The fox hole.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I have one last question and then Mr. DeBrell, I promised you another turn.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Just want to make sure that we have enough in place and enough ideas that we don't lock it into one idea, robotics.

Unknown speaker not human verified

but that this has such incredible potential if if it comes to be that we

Unknown speaker not human verified

have I just see you went to the Toyota Center I'm sure you have lots and lots

Unknown speaker not human verified

of I married an engineer and a son's an engineer I mean they would just be all

Unknown speaker not human verified

excited about this so lots of ideas lots of places I see for interesting things

Unknown speaker not human verified

and have we planned for future potential and it's all of that in mr. canal if I

Unknown speaker not human verified

could take a swing at that one initially when we took a look at the number of

Unknown speaker not human verified

project days we were looking at a smaller number but as we began to have

Unknown speaker not human verified

discussions on what it could be and how much space you may have we came to the

Unknown speaker not human verified

point to saying that we really needed a larger number of project days so you

Unknown speaker not human verified

you have the opportunity there to have those eight project bays doing eight different things

Unknown speaker not human verified

with eight different schools or eight combinations of schools.

Unknown speaker not human verified

In addition to the, you see the classrooms kind of to the north of the diagram there,

Unknown speaker not human verified

that with the folding wall there, that can be a big room or two smaller rooms,

Unknown speaker not human verified

which can be additional bays.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Add to that the opportunity for projects that have to go outside for whatever reason,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and you don't quite see it on here, but it's in the upper left-hand corner of the area,

Unknown speaker not human verified

would give you a pad there where you could be doing experiments outside,

Unknown speaker not human verified

plus whatever you would be doing on the inside for demonstration.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So really the intent of this was to provide maximum flexibility,

Unknown speaker not human verified

realizing that we could not definitely determine everything that we would expect the STEM Center to be doing over the next 20 years.

Unknown speaker not human verified

but we believe that this floor plan gives us the options to provide us the most flexibility working with the team that we could come up with.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The 20-foot ceilings is enough for whatever?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Do you feel like that's because aren't gymnasiums 24 or 26?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Say that again?

Unknown speaker not human verified

What about gymnasiums?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Gymnasiums are taller than that.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Is it enough?

Unknown speaker not human verified

I don't see us doing a gymnasium, but I see a float.

Unknown speaker not human verified

What if you want to create a float?

Unknown speaker not human verified

What if you want to create a throne?

Unknown speaker not human verified

I still think the 20 feet would be pretty good.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And I just want to add one last comment to what Mr. McAnill had said.

Unknown speaker not human verified

During our committee meetings, we explored how elementary campuses could come here and visit

Unknown speaker not human verified

and see what's happening in the middle schools as well.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Because the high school activities, some things will happen during the day,

Unknown speaker not human verified

but a lot will happen after night.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So there's opportunities for all grade levels to at least come and see what's happening here

Unknown speaker not human verified

and then get excited about.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Well, and Sarah, I know, is anxious because there's

Unknown speaker not human verified

a lot of possibility that's been mentioned

Unknown speaker not human verified

from a career technology perspective

Unknown speaker not human verified

that it's almost limitless.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And we've tried to provide a campus that

Unknown speaker not human verified

has so much flexibility that the teaching and learning folks can.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And I know that they haven't got all their ideas formulated yet,

Unknown speaker not human verified

but they're pulling everything together.

Unknown speaker not human verified

other. Mr. DeBrell. Great design. I think it's very forward-thinking moving forward

Unknown speaker not human verified

with the STEM project but I have a concern about security. I don't know

Unknown speaker not human verified

Chief maybe you can speak to this because we know these young people are

Unknown speaker not human verified

going to be out there at night sometimes late into the evening. Any provisions for

Unknown speaker not human verified

security so we can assure their safety? Well there's going to be standard

Unknown speaker not human verified

security as we have in the rest of our facilities intrusion protection as well

Unknown speaker not human verified

as CCTV but I think our biggest prevention is the adult chaperones we

Unknown speaker not human verified

would have to mandate adult chaperones while the students are there and I would

Unknown speaker not human verified

again great great ideas great design I would just maybe make a comment that

Unknown speaker not human verified

this is not for any one group it's not for one thing it is limitless and for

Unknown speaker not human verified

every student in our district and I'm appreciate the presentation mr. president

Unknown speaker not human verified

and I appreciate those comments there because that does well was gonna say

Unknown speaker not human verified

when you think about our mission statement about those unpretty learning

Unknown speaker not human verified

experiences that kids create in the future that's what this is about our kids are

Unknown speaker not human verified

going to go in there and they're going to imagine things and create things that we

Unknown speaker not human verified

don't have a clue about right now and so this is designed to be very flexible to

Unknown speaker not human verified

allow maximum creativity and whatnot and I've got to say that SACW went

Unknown speaker not human verified

beyond my imagination and I'm just blown away and I talked to your CEO Marjorie I

Unknown speaker not human verified

talked to Kyle Bacon your chief operations officer as well and said I'm

Unknown speaker not human verified

just so pleased with the way you all work with the community with your

Unknown speaker not human verified

committee and the way you interpret their input and this is just really

Unknown speaker not human verified

blown my mind I really appreciate you guys thank you very much thank you to

Unknown speaker not human verified

those who served on the committee I know it took a lot of time and mr. Fraley or

Unknown speaker not human verified

for our graduates?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Yes, ma'am, it does.

Unknown speaker not human verified

As a matter of fact, STEM is one of the five endorsements.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So it's absolutely aligned with the new graduation

Unknown speaker not human verified

requirements.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Yes, ma'am.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And if I could add, and the thing about this

Unknown speaker not human verified

is this is not your typical classroom sit

Unknown speaker not human verified

and get kind of place.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is a project center.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is where kids bring their designs

Unknown speaker not human verified

and where they create their designs,

Unknown speaker not human verified

manufacture their designs.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And we're already working in partnership

Unknown speaker not human verified

with several companies in the area in terms of sponsorships.

Unknown speaker not human verified

and we have some visions of specific type things I can't get into right now

Unknown speaker not human verified

but we're very excited that the interest from some of our local companies has

Unknown speaker not human verified

has been really spurred and we're excited about what can happen with that

Unknown speaker not human verified

may I ask one more question the I understand that we still have the second

Unknown speaker not human verified

floor of the Miller Career Center to be expanded at some point but that facility

Unknown speaker not human verified

does not have 20 foot ceilings and does not would not have been an option for

Unknown speaker not human verified

this type of project center is that correct thank you thank you very much

Unknown speaker not human verified

for your presentation I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge our Campbell art is

Unknown speaker not human verified

the project manager from my department that's been working night and day on this project great to see

Unknown speaker not human verified

you here mr campbell thank you mr mack michael wayne back over number two

Unknown speaker not human verified

we have a resolution to designate a district administrator for the public agency the

Unknown speaker not human verified

the PARS plan.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. Schneider?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Is Mr. Schneider presenting here?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. Schneider?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Don't take that personally.

Unknown speaker not human verified

They do it to us all the time when they leave.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Hi, Mr. Schneider.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Welcome.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We're glad you're here this evening.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you.

Unknown speaker not human verified

President Fox and school board members, Mr. Fraley,

Unknown speaker not human verified

the resolution that you have in front of you

Unknown speaker not human verified

is just a required document.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The PARS trustee organization, that

Unknown speaker not human verified

has to do with a lot of the retirement benefits

Unknown speaker not human verified

benefits that we offer and that was decided back in 2001. When they did an audit recently,

Unknown speaker not human verified

they came through the process and noticed that our policy, there was no, at the time

Unknown speaker not human verified

when they passed it, there was no designee as in who has the authority to oversee this

Unknown speaker not human verified

program and the trustees of their organization require that you have a resolution to do so.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So this is just a formality to meet their expectation that was missing in the policy

Unknown speaker not human verified

when they did the audit.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So the request is just to name the position of my position to be the overseer, which it

Unknown speaker not human verified

already is.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It's just designated in policy.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Any questions?

Unknown speaker not human verified

No.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Board members, this one cannot be moved to consent because the resolution will be read

Unknown speaker not human verified

into the record.

Unknown speaker not human verified

any objection to moving tab 1 to the consent agenda so moved item 3 our

Unknown speaker not human verified

district improvement plan good evening mrs. Holland it's great to see you

Unknown speaker not human verified

you're bringing someone with you that doesn't look like free to preach but

Unknown speaker not human verified

you'll introduce her to us the plan that we bring before you tonight is the

Unknown speaker not human verified

a result of a lot of hard work on a lot of people's part. It has been a very collaborative

Unknown speaker not human verified

and cooperative effort involving all divisions and all departments. As you know, the basis

Unknown speaker not human verified

of the district improvement plan is the needs assessment that Dr. Creech had presented earlier.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And one of the individuals in her department who's worked very closely with us in this

Unknown speaker not human verified

whole process is Allison Matney, who is director of research assessment and accountability.

Unknown speaker not human verified

accountability, and I want to acknowledge Allison and the team back there that has helped

Unknown speaker not human verified

us to pull all the data together that formulates the plan.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The plan that we are presenting to you tonight has been reorganized from what you're used

Unknown speaker not human verified

to seeing.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It involves a much more integrated approach with a goal focus rather than a departmental

Unknown speaker not human verified

or division focus.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It is Mr. Fraley's intent that we as a cabinet will evaluate the progress toward each of

Unknown speaker not human verified

these goals on a quarterly basis and we

Unknown speaker not human verified

intend for this to be a dynamic working

Unknown speaker not human verified

document it is not a document to be

Unknown speaker not human verified

shelved we will adjust and modify the

Unknown speaker not human verified

document as information and situations

Unknown speaker not human verified

dictate for example we do not have all

Unknown speaker not human verified

the information on House Bill 5 yet so

Unknown speaker not human verified

there is still work to be done there but

Unknown speaker not human verified

we believe that the reorganization of

Unknown speaker not human verified

the plan helps us to ensure that both

Unknown speaker not human verified

the district that the district plans and our campus improvement plans will be

Unknown speaker not human verified

mutually supportive because the goal there is a goal focus rather than a

Unknown speaker not human verified

focus on departments or individual activities so we're quite pleased to

Unknown speaker not human verified

bring the plan to you for consideration any questions thank you so much any

Unknown speaker not human verified

objection to moving this to consent agenda so moved thank you ladies

Unknown speaker not human verified

We have the LEP enrollment and bilingual exception application presented by Dr. Lawson.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mrs. Ferris, how do you do?

Unknown speaker not human verified

It's great to see you over here.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Good evening.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Hi, Mrs. Ferris.

Unknown speaker not human verified

How are you?

Unknown speaker not human verified

We're doing well.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I'm Alisa Ferris.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I'm the director for ESL and bilingual programs.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Linda Shepherd is assistant director.

Unknown speaker not human verified

and we're here tonight to request your permission to prepare and submit our

Unknown speaker not human verified

bilingual exception report for 2013 2014 this year as of October 7th we had nine

Unknown speaker not human verified

thousand two hundred and thirty five and just within the last week we've added

Unknown speaker not human verified

15 or so more students to our ELL population that's up from about six

Unknown speaker not human verified

6% from last year. We qualify for bilingual programs by the virtue of having at least

Unknown speaker not human verified

20 students in a certain language population across a particular grade level in our school

Unknown speaker not human verified

district. So with 20 kindergarteners who speak Urdu, let's say, we would qualify for that

Unknown speaker not human verified

program. And so the bilingual exception is being written for eight languages this year.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, Urdu, Vietnamese, Korean, Hindi, Portuguese, and Telugu.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We have one that dropped off this past year and that was Tagalog.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We are down a few students in that group so we just missed needing the bilingual exception

Unknown speaker not human verified

for that language.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Do you all have any questions for us about that?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Is this very similar to years past?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Yes, it is.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is a routine waiver that we request?

Unknown speaker not human verified

When we could have bilingual programs in all these other languages

Unknown speaker not human verified

because of the population we have here in Katy, yes.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And other districts do this similar?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Yes.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Request similar waivers?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Seventy languages and eight of them do qualify for bilingual programs,

Unknown speaker not human verified

but we request this waiver so that we can serve them through wonderful

Unknown speaker not human verified

second language programming through our ESL. Thank you. Mr. Griffin. Ma'am how did

Unknown speaker not human verified

these numbers compare like statewide or national wise? Are we pretty much a

Unknown speaker not human verified

snapshot of people in Texas or do we have unusually high number of kids in

Unknown speaker not human verified

this program? Without doing some heavy research I would say that we are fairly

Unknown speaker not human verified

fairly well in line with across the state. I don't know nationally.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Okay, thanks.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Any objection to moving this to consent agenda? So moved.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you for being here this evening. Nice to meet you, Ms. Shepherd.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you very much.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Good evening, Dr. Caskey.

Unknown speaker not human verified

You have our tab number five.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I think I have two things in the second part of the presentation.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Okay.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I'll move over here if that's okay.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The first thing I have this evening, well, good evening, President Fox, board members,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and Mr. Fraley.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I bring before you this evening the standard timeline for accelerated

Unknown speaker not human verified

instruction waiver this is a waiver that comes before you every three years and

Unknown speaker not human verified

basically what it does is it allows us time to give students accelerated

Unknown speaker not human verified

instruction after the third administration of star so students in

Unknown speaker not human verified

grades five and eight who are not successful in reading and our math were

Unknown speaker not human verified

required to provide them accelerated instruction after each test

Unknown speaker not human verified

administration because the third test administration falls in the summer we

Unknown speaker not human verified

don't have time in order to provide that instruction to the students so this

Unknown speaker not human verified

waiver allows us to provide that instruction the first six weeks of

Unknown speaker not human verified

school again this is a standard waiver any questions any objection to moving it

Unknown speaker not human verified

consent so moved thank you

Unknown speaker not human verified

instructional materials

Unknown speaker not human verified

bill

Unknown speaker not human verified

Okay, good evening again.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The presentation this evening is actually twofold.

Unknown speaker not human verified

One is to provide you with an update on our instructional materials allotment, and secondly

Unknown speaker not human verified

is to seek your approval for advanced placement Spanish language resources that were not ready

Unknown speaker not human verified

when we brought before the board our instructional materials list in the spring.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Again, to start with a brief history to keep coming back to Senate Bill six

Unknown speaker not human verified

and the creation of the instructional materials allotment was created in 2011

Unknown speaker not human verified

to provide school districts with flexibility in purchasing the materials

Unknown speaker not human verified

that best meet the needs of the students in our district.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It also expanded the definition of instructional materials.

Unknown speaker not human verified

beyond that of just the textbook and it created an allotment based on a per

Unknown speaker not human verified

pupil amount and whenever I can highlight this I choose to do so to let

Unknown speaker not human verified

you and the public know that KISD does not rely solely on textbooks as our main

Unknown speaker not human verified

resource for delivery of the curriculum but we have a multitude of instructional

Unknown speaker not human verified

resources within our classrooms including online resources literature

Unknown speaker not human verified

literature libraries, technology, and many other hands-on tools for our students to bring

Unknown speaker not human verified

learning to life in the classroom.

Unknown speaker not human verified

An update on the instructional materials allotment budget.

Unknown speaker not human verified

In 2012, 2013, we ended the year with a little over $3.5 million in our budget.

Unknown speaker not human verified

In 2013-14, we received a little over $5 million.

Unknown speaker not human verified

You need to remember that we are in year one of the second biennium of the instructional

Unknown speaker not human verified

materials allotment.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We did have some expenditures thus far this year, and that was for growth.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So we have already had to expend some of that money simply for growth.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We did apply again this year for an additional amount, being a high growth district.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We did receive close to $170,000 for that, which leaves our 2013-14 instructional materials

Unknown speaker not human verified

allotment at a little over eight and a half million dollars. Proclamation 2014

Unknown speaker not human verified

this is the largest proclamation that we've had in the last few years. You can

Unknown speaker not human verified

see that the materials that we are looking at adoption for implementation

Unknown speaker not human verified

next year for grades K through five we have math and science. For our junior

Unknown speaker not human verified

highs grades six through eight we also have math and science. At the high school

Unknown speaker not human verified

level we have several of our high school science courses as well as our

Unknown speaker not human verified

technology applications courses these are all courses that are identified in

Unknown speaker not human verified

proclamation 2014 in addition to that we have some courses that are not specified

Unknown speaker not human verified

in proclamation 2014 that also require updated instructional materials you'll

Unknown speaker not human verified

notice a lot of these are advanced placement courses as well as some of our

Unknown speaker not human verified

elective courses so these are also courses that we have to use the same

Unknown speaker not human verified

process with as far as adopting materials and bringing them before the board for approval.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So our timeline.

Unknown speaker not human verified

In September we established review committees.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We do have representation from all of our campuses.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We also solicited parent participation through campus e-news, a press release, and our district

Unknown speaker not human verified

website.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It's that tiny little URL on there, but it was very, very easy for parents to go on,

Unknown speaker not human verified

express an interest in what committee they would like to serve on. Coming up

Unknown speaker not human verified

November and December the committee's will be reviewing instructional

Unknown speaker not human verified

materials. In the month of January we will have the materials on display here

Unknown speaker not human verified

at the ESC to continue to collect information from the community.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We also have an online survey. In February the review committee will make

Unknown speaker not human verified

recommendations to our district instructional materials allotment team

Unknown speaker not human verified

team, and then recommendations we're anticipating bringing them before the board in April.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We have review committees that represent, again, all campuses.

Unknown speaker not human verified

They consist of general education teachers as well as specialty teachers, parents, instructional

Unknown speaker not human verified

coaches, and curriculum staff members serving on those review committees.

Unknown speaker not human verified

committees. Kind of part two of this is the request for us to secure AP Spanish language

Unknown speaker not human verified

and cultural resources. There has been a change in this particular AP exam and the materials

Unknown speaker not human verified

that we have do not meet the needs or the demands for the changes in this exam. So we

Unknown speaker not human verified

bring before you this evening some materials to be approved for our AP language and culture

Unknown speaker not human verified

course and the committees have reviewed materials and they are recommending

Unknown speaker not human verified

these resources by Vista higher higher learning and where do we go in the

Unknown speaker not human verified

future you will notice that in 2015 and the next three subsequent years we do

Unknown speaker not human verified

have rather large proclamations coming up so this is exciting that we're

Unknown speaker not human verified

putting this process into place with proclamation 2014 and we'll continue to

Unknown speaker not human verified

to improve the process as we go, but you can see they're on the horizon.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We have lots of instructional materials that we'll be reviewing and looking at for our

Unknown speaker not human verified

students.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I'm here to respond to any questions that you may have.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Madam President.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. Griffin, thank you for the audible.

Unknown speaker not human verified

This is kind of a lengthy question.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Here's a kind of problem that my kids have run into this year.

Unknown speaker not human verified

They don't have the greatest teacher.

Unknown speaker not human verified

they have a teacher in the classroom and by having a book as a reference material

Unknown speaker not human verified

only they were presented with homework so the textbook really didn't give them

Unknown speaker not human verified

the information that they needed they didn't get then the information from the

Unknown speaker not human verified

teacher like they needed so she ended up having to do a lot of internet research

Unknown speaker not human verified

and there happens to be a couple schools out there that do a really good job of

Unknown speaker not human verified

putting a lot of stuff on the internet we have the best district in the world

Unknown speaker not human verified

is there any way with the technology that we have in our school that instead

Unknown speaker not human verified

of using other school districts or other teaching facilities to have like each

Unknown speaker not human verified

one of our teaks taught by some of our outstanding teachers like Katie happens

Unknown speaker not human verified

to have probably the best chemistry AP chemistry teacher in the whole wide

Unknown speaker not human verified

world you know the kids at Morton Ranch can't utilize that teacher or Cinco or

Unknown speaker not human verified

or seven lakes but if we could somehow take our great teachers that we have in

Unknown speaker not human verified

some way encapsulate their teaching techniques you know are some of our

Unknown speaker not human verified

teachers who might need a little help could watch those videos is there any

Unknown speaker not human verified

work with this instructional material that we can kind of capture our great

Unknown speaker not human verified

teachers so that all of our kids throughout the district has that you

Unknown speaker not human verified

know help if they need it because I agree with you the textbook is reference

Unknown speaker not human verified

only but there's times if our kids aren't getting it from their teacher

Unknown speaker not human verified

where do we want them to go there are a lot of different resources that are out

Unknown speaker not human verified

there I know that teachers post resources on their websites I like the

Unknown speaker not human verified

idea that you pose about us videotaping and kind of look into Darlene over there

Unknown speaker not human verified

I think we do some of that do we not we do tape some of our teachers and we have

Unknown speaker not human verified

those those sessions that are actually stored and teachers can go and download

Unknown speaker not human verified

download those and view those sessions. So those are practices that we do have into place. We have

Unknown speaker not human verified

tons and tons of resources in Katie for our teachers. Yeah, but like my kids too, maybe we

Unknown speaker not human verified

need more information out to the students because, you know, I was helping her with a lot of this

Unknown speaker not human verified

stuff and man, it was very hard. At least she didn't know where to go or I didn't know where

Unknown speaker not human verified

to go to find that help. But the internet in general was really easy. But I just, I found

Unknown speaker not human verified

it difficult that man the textbook was horrible you know on the lessons that she needed to and

Unknown speaker not human verified

she didn't know where to go so you know we went to the internet if if we had it that would be

Unknown speaker not human verified

really good if that information was passed out a little bit better thanks mr fraley i see a

Unknown speaker not human verified

celebration mr griffin you're an air force academy grant correct yes sir it was it was hard for you

Unknown speaker not human verified

we have not lowered standards in kdsd we have not lowered standards at all all right

Unknown speaker not human verified

We truly have a tremendous number of outstanding teachers across this district.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Sometimes teaching styles and whatnot may connect better with students and whatnot.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So we do have a structural management system, the ability to capture, share lessons,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and the idea of having some model lessons on video, video vignettes, I think is an excellent idea to look at.

Unknown speaker not human verified

and I know we have that in some places and we just need to expand and continue

Unknown speaker not human verified

growing that mr. de Brown two questions what percentage of instructional

Unknown speaker not human verified

material do we currently have online that's available to our students as

Unknown speaker not human verified

opposed to basically just about everything I would say just about

Unknown speaker not human verified

everything I would say just about and when you purchase now they'll give you

Unknown speaker not human verified

the on you know they like to give you the online with the hard copy of the book okay so with that

Unknown speaker not human verified

are we moving more to a classroom set of books yes sir yes sir um the survey that you're planning in

Unknown speaker not human verified

january how are we communicating that survey is available to the public what's the plans

Unknown speaker not human verified

on communicating that out come on uh president campus newsletters similarly to how we solicited

Unknown speaker not human verified

parent responses for participating on the committee front page of the website.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We are also going to have, I guess, exhibits of all of the books that are under consideration

Unknown speaker not human verified

and have some sort of Google Doc form where they can use their smartphones to give feedback as well.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We'll be e-blasting it out like the survey we got last week sometime as well.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We can certainly consider that. What we've done is we've looked at the campuses that put it out through their e-news.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So we did not e-blast it to the whole district. It pertains just to teachers and parents.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Dr. Proctor?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Just a question on a timeline. So in January, will you have a list of the materials that we want to use?

Unknown speaker not human verified

will there be like a a central place where someone can see all of the

Unknown speaker not human verified

materials in case you know you said you have them you'll have some here but I

Unknown speaker not human verified

mean if is there some way for me to find out what you have here without coming

Unknown speaker not human verified

here I mean that's you know I'm thinking if somebody has an interest in certain

Unknown speaker not human verified

certain area and they want to see if we have materials there, could they look online and

Unknown speaker not human verified

then say, yeah, I want to come by and see what we have?

Unknown speaker not human verified

MS.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We can put that up.

Unknown speaker not human verified

MS.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. Huckabee?

Unknown speaker not human verified

MR.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. Griffin experienced something I've been trying to get people, parents the last

Unknown speaker not human verified

two years to understand is that, and I still have some parents who they think that it's

Unknown speaker not human verified

live and die by the textbook and the textbooks are I mean by the time they

Unknown speaker not human verified

get them to us they're they're obsolete right and in way I tell a lot of the

Unknown speaker not human verified

parents I said you know if there's something you don't understand go to

Unknown speaker not human verified

YouTube I promise you you'll find the answer and it'll teach you and there'll

Unknown speaker not human verified

be thousands of teachers or students who have put projects on there that are

Unknown speaker not human verified

unbelievable and actually what I've done this year and I've started it through my

Unknown speaker not human verified

director of instruction in order to replace a test grade they had to make a

Unknown speaker not human verified

project with animoto or video or something that I could upload and I'm

Unknown speaker not human verified

actually creating my own YouTube page just for my class and we'll be putting

Unknown speaker not human verified

the student projects out there so that anyone from here on out can go and see

Unknown speaker not human verified

and she was tickled to death about it and then when I sent her some of the

Unknown speaker not human verified

the project she was really shocked at how some of the kids extensively is that

Unknown speaker not human verified

because there a lot of them were asking questions I said go I said what I keep

Unknown speaker not human verified

telling you go to YouTube and look see how they did them model it you know and

Unknown speaker not human verified

some kids were okay and some kids were fantastic but it's that is a phenomenal

Unknown speaker not human verified

resource mr. Mahalsky thank you could you go back to the slide that had the

Unknown speaker not human verified

kind of the allegation balances. Yeah so looks like on the ending balance for the

Unknown speaker not human verified

last year you know we have fairly sizable balance and in this 2013-14 and

Unknown speaker not human verified

now is that just a one-year allotment or is that a biennial allotment? We will

Unknown speaker not human verified

receive we're anticipating about that much again for next year. Okay my

Unknown speaker not human verified

question is this I'm just trying to get a little better understanding of how you

Unknown speaker not human verified

I guess manage that obviously that we have some flexibility now with I guess

Unknown speaker not human verified

Senate bill 6 and and we're given the dollars and we kind of figure out how to

Unknown speaker not human verified

spend them we had a little carryover does that do we feel like we need that

Unknown speaker not human verified

for the upcoming proclamations or I guess my question is more do we ever

Unknown speaker not human verified

feel like we're going to spend all of it and you know how does that I guess how

Unknown speaker not human verified

do you mean this is the first time first time for us so we have been very

Unknown speaker not human verified

conservative without a proclamation this is the first proclamation that IMA has

Unknown speaker not human verified

been involved with so we're very we're going to monitor it very very closely

Unknown speaker not human verified

okay good president if I may also if you look at the number of proclamations yet

Unknown speaker not human verified

to come and you don't know what subsequent legislatures are going to

Unknown speaker not human verified

allocate you get that's why we were very very careful this first time around

Unknown speaker not human verified

because there was no assurance that they would allocate the money for the same amount for the next biennium.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And they meet again in 2015, and we don't know what's going to happen then.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And they'll meet again in 2017.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And you see we have other proclamations coming about, and we're growing,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and you'll get a report next week about our growth.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So I think it was wise that we did take what we did when we did it.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Does that make sense?

Unknown speaker not human verified

We did what we did when we did it.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It's kind of a Yogi Berra thingy, I guess.

Unknown speaker not human verified

But we've been very, very conservative with expanding these resources

Unknown speaker not human verified

because they've combined textbooks along with technology.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We no longer have a technology allotment.

Unknown speaker not human verified

They're all combined now.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And we don't quite have everyone on board with electronic textbooks

Unknown speaker not human verified

that don't require you to buy the hard copy as well

Unknown speaker not human verified

and then have access to it online.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So will these be enough dollars?

Unknown speaker not human verified

We don't know.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And as Mr. Fraley stated, there's a portion of this money that we do have to allocate to technology because they lost their fund.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So we do work closely with John and his staff as well.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I certainly like a conservative approach when it comes to spending.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. Adams?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Dr. Caskey, then am I to assume that this is a formula-based amount that we are receiving?

Unknown speaker not human verified

and secondly as we have talked about fund balances in the past the state has

Unknown speaker not human verified

always I'd fund balances and I just in piggybacking on mr. Mahowski's comment

Unknown speaker not human verified

is that should we try to spend it so that they can't take it back from us

Unknown speaker not human verified

this is not part of the fund balance per se on districts books and this is the

Unknown speaker not human verified

money that the state has actually allocated for them to draw down on. Now

Unknown speaker not human verified

if you're saying they're giving us money on one hand and might look at our fund

Unknown speaker not human verified

balances on the other hand I can't answer that part. I guess would they look

Unknown speaker not human verified

at the the underspending if we have any money in those funds to take it back. And

Unknown speaker not human verified

this kind of scare has been going on since it started and Senate Bill 6 says

Unknown speaker not human verified

it rolls over from biennium biennium. So they'd have to change the law.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And then additionally, there were districts that spent all of their money and didn't have

Unknown speaker not human verified

funds for their beginning of the school year because of the delay in allocating the

Unknown speaker not human verified

September 1 allotment.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Madam President, when the initial effort at this came about,

Unknown speaker not human verified

there were conflicting directives or suggestions sent out. One set would say

Unknown speaker not human verified

spend it all and some districts did. Then they said well our bad maybe you

Unknown speaker not human verified

shouldn't do all that because what was gonna happen next time around. We erred on the

Unknown speaker not human verified

part of the latter. I just don't know what was going to happen and plus we

Unknown speaker not human verified

don't know the pricing of these construction materials is going up and

Unknown speaker not human verified

up and up and up and up without a doubt I would piggyback on mr. Griffin's

Unknown speaker not human verified

statements except that probably we're going to disagree about was it the best

Unknown speaker not human verified

chemistry teacher you said you I know one too but it's not the same one I bet

Unknown speaker not human verified

mine's best and so because we have those best in the whole wide world how

Unknown speaker not human verified

incredible would it be if they could post their best lessons somewhere I know

Unknown speaker not human verified

I know that KMAC was a place where they could share information teacher to teacher.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And I know we have technology with smart boards where I've seen some teachers take a great

Unknown speaker not human verified

lesson and put it on for kids who might have been absent or maybe just temporarily absent

Unknown speaker not human verified

in the chair.

Unknown speaker not human verified

At night when you go home to do the homework, you can look back and see the lesson again.

Unknown speaker not human verified

With the technology we have now and with the incredible teachers, the best in the whole

Unknown speaker not human verified

whole wide world that are right here in KDISD.

Unknown speaker not human verified

How great to be able to share that school to school, zip

Unknown speaker not human verified

code to zip code.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I think that would be an incredible thing.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And I agree with Mr. Huckabee just this once, that we saw a

Unknown speaker not human verified

presentation at a conference about iTunes U. iTunes U. And

Unknown speaker not human verified

And there was almost every subject covered in iTunes U.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So there are places where parents like me can go to help

Unknown speaker not human verified

get calculus help for your children.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And it's free.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And it's free.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So there are lots of resources when someone thinks they

Unknown speaker not human verified

aren't smart enough to help their kids.

Unknown speaker not human verified

But our teachers are incredible.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We're so grateful for them.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And the best chemistry teacher is at my house.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And I do believe chemistry is one of the textbooks that's

Unknown speaker not human verified

indicated in proclamation 2014.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Um, President, I love that idea of

Unknown speaker not human verified

videotaping some of our teachers and

Unknown speaker not human verified

allowing that resource to be used by

Unknown speaker not human verified

parents and students at night so they

Unknown speaker not human verified

can review the lesson. Free to KDIs these

Unknown speaker not human verified

students, but uh, Mr. Moore, could we charge

Unknown speaker not human verified

people outside of district to utilize

Unknown speaker not human verified

that?

Unknown speaker not human verified

So good.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Madam President, you mentioned KMAC and ability to share lessons there.

Unknown speaker not human verified

You can do this in the current, in the new.

Unknown speaker not human verified

What's it called again?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Forethought.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Forethought.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Also, your smart board software has a, if you wear your headphones,

Unknown speaker not human verified

you can actually record your entire lesson,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and what will show up on the screen is what you're putting on the smart board,

Unknown speaker not human verified

but your voice is following it the whole time.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And then you can leave, you know, it becomes a permanent deal to use and that's what I use when I'm not going to be in class.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you for your presentation.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Any other questions?

Unknown speaker not human verified

Any objection to moving this item, instructional materials, to the consent agenda?

Unknown speaker not human verified

So moved.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you very much.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Our final discussion for consideration tonight is the October 2013 budget amendments.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Good evening, Mr. Smith.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Good evening, Ms. Fox and Board and Mr. Fraley.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I'm going to start out with some accounting stuff and housekeeping that we're going to take care of.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The first four amendments deal with year-end, and those are items that we bought

Unknown speaker not human verified

or attempted to buy and did not get delivery before year-end.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Those were the startup supplies at Tompkins High School and Katy High School.

Unknown speaker not human verified

in the amounts of $625,060 and $10,500 respectively.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And then we also did not receive the or did not have the project finished for the secure door access system,

Unknown speaker not human verified

nor did we receive our white fleet prior to the end of August 31st.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So because of that, that's going to be shown up in our fund balance when the auditors present that in January.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We're amending the budget now to spend those funds in this budget year.

The other two are increases to the general fund.

Unknown speaker not human verified

One is two-way radios required by the FCC, and as I understand it, it's a standard change

Unknown speaker not human verified

to a digital format that we're required to move to.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And then we did not intend, but we lost the use of one of our pallet jacks, and we needed

Unknown speaker not human verified

to replace that, and that's $6,730.

Unknown speaker not human verified

The other remaining items are moving monies from one function to another.

Unknown speaker not human verified

That would increase the expenditures in the general fund budget by $1,585,689.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Then moving away from the general fund over to the food service fund or special revenue

Unknown speaker not human verified

fund, the kitchen renovations at Taylor High School, we had some accounting issues such

Unknown speaker not human verified

as retainage and not quite finished with the punch list on that by August 31st.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And so we are moving budget, it will be in fund balance of the food service fund,

Unknown speaker not human verified

and moving budgeted expenditures of $288,460 over to the 13-14 school year there.

Unknown speaker not human verified

In all, the general fund and the special revenue fund or food service fund budgets increased by $1,874,149.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Madam President.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Mr. Maholsky.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Okay, so let me make sure I understand this.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Most of this is a timing difference. It was not delivered.

Unknown speaker not human verified

So we can expect when we get the audit then that the actual general fund balance for August 31st

Unknown speaker not human verified

is going to be higher than what that final amended budget was.

Unknown speaker not human verified

That is correct.

Unknown speaker not human verified

By those amounts.

Unknown speaker not human verified

That is correct.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Part of our underspending.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Very good.

Unknown speaker not human verified

And then the other thing is we're using funds from the food service balance to do the kitchen renovations.

Unknown speaker not human verified

still that was something I think we've been doing now for a couple of years

Unknown speaker not human verified

right that helps us with some I guess there's a maximum

Unknown speaker not human verified

balance you can have in that fund to some degree.

Unknown speaker not human verified

That's correct. And that helps us with that. That's correct.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Very good. Any objection to

Unknown speaker not human verified

moving this item to consent agenda? So moved.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Thank you Mr. Smith.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Unknown speaker not human verified

So we'll see you there, and then we will recognize our namesakes on Monday night.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It's in ESC 1030. It's just on the hallway.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Okay, great.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Actually, sir, it's going to be in the 1,200 rooms.

Unknown speaker not human verified

We moved it because of the size.

Unknown speaker not human verified

I didn't get my invite.

Unknown speaker not human verified

It's on the right date, Maria.

Unknown speaker not human verified

reasons.

Unknown speaker not human verified

October 28th. See you then.

Unknown speaker not human verified

Having no further business,

Unknown speaker not human verified

8.32, this meeting is adjourned.
