What are my opinions of these candidates? You should really come to your own conclusions, but I’m a fan of being transparent, so here’s my take:
I’ve spoken at length with Susan, Scott, and Dawn. Don Massey offered to meet with me, but when I asked him when a good time would be to meet, he never responded. He may be busy, and I look forward to scheduling some time to speak with him. Until then, I can only make assumptions based on his publicly expressed opinions.
Susan Gesoff is a very sweet, very intelligent, strong woman, I spoke with her at length. After I was persona non grata with the district, she had no fear having a discussion with me in front of the district staff. That meant a lot. She asked about my issues, and really listened to my side of the issue. I think she has the best interest of students in mind, she is a strong supporter of STEM, and I genuinely believe she is running for the right reasons. I would welcome Susan Gesoff as an example of a strong woman in a male-dominated industry, for my daughter to look up to and be inspired by. Susan recently posted that she is against Single Member Districts. You can read more on her perspective on her Facebook page.
I also spoke at length with Scott Martin, he is a very intelligent, very thoughtful individual who I can tell cares deeply about this district. We spoke about the details of the issues I’ve had with my son in this district, and he was very welcoming to my disagreements with how the district was handling things. I can see his legal background playing an important role in thinking very analytically when Katy ISD puts on the smoke and mirrors show. I have confidence that he will see through it, and stick to the measurable facts. I also really like the idea of Single Member Districts. Admittedly, I haven’t done a ton of research (just being honest), but on its surface it makes sense that board members represent subsections of the district. I graduated from Mayde Creek and attended McDonald Junior High, and they currently have zero representation on the School Board. I think that should change.
Between Scott and Susan, if I’m absolutely honest, I wish I could vote for them both. I wish they ran for different seats so I could. But, if I have to choose, I choose Scott, only based on my current opinions of Single Member Districts, which could change given more information and research. If someone can present an argument against Single Member Districts, I would happily change my mind, and I welcome evidence that it’s not a good idea. But, on the surface, I like it.
As for Don Massey and Dawn Champagne. I can’t help but be biased here. Dawn Champaign lived directly across the street from my mother for many many years in Kelliwood Pointe. Her husband kept better care of that lawn than any lawn I have ever seen in my entire life. I’m dead serious about that. It was spectacular. Her husband also hired me back when I was a DJ, for his Christmas parties at Mustang Engineering. They are really good people. So, subjectively and completely biased, I love the idea of Dawn being on the school board. That’s not at all fair to Don Massey, and I admit that. I asked to meet with Don Massey to get to know him, and so far he has not responded to a date that works for him. I’m open and available, and look forward to getting to know him. But, until I do, I’m on team Dawn.
In conclusions, I’m rooting for Scott and Dawn. This can easily change as I receive new information.
